Nero Recode 2 for me hands down...!!! I don't know how fast is your processor and why your DVD Shrink is running faster than Nero Recode 2, but I've used Nero Recode 2 to encode nearly 99% of my backups and it's 2 times faster than DVD Shrink.
Here is an example/comparison from Nero Recode 2 and DVD Shrink:
----------- for Nero Recode 2 ------------
** I can encode using a "Advanced Analysis"[this will encode in 2 passes and the quality is awesome] in roughly 27 - 30 minutes.
** I can encode using a regular encoding without any "Advanced Analysis" in about 7 - 10 minutes.
----------- for DVD Shrink ---------------
** I can encode using a "Advanced Analysis" in about 60 minutes.
** I can encode using a regular encoding without "Advanced Analysis" from 25 - 30 minutes.

that is what i mean, like when i use shrink my movie will encode real fast about 20-30 min, what ever size movie it is. my recode is encoding like i'm watching the movie. how do i speed it up on encoding in recode 2?

Hummmm... sounds like you'r having DMA issues. Is your DMA on or off or in Pio Mode by chance?

I definitely have to agree with alkohol - Nero Recode2 is faster than shrink - its my understanding that Recode2 is made by the same person that made shrink - but shrink is still older and has not been updated for a while.
Did you check your DMA settings like alkohol suggested?
Do you know how to check for it?
My Recode2 will usual encode in about 8 mins on on regular and about 15-16 in advanced mode. My shrink will usually encode avegrage about 15-20 minutes on regular (I have never done advanced analysis in shrink so I cannot comment on the latter).
Here is how you check your DMA:
START
Control Panel
Performance & Maintenance
System
Hardware tab
(click on) Device Manager
Click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
CLICK ON EACH PRIMARY and EACH SECONDARY IDE CHANNELS and follow these next instructions for each channel:
Advanced Settings
(check yo see if you are operating in DMA mode)
If you see any that say PIO mode - CHANGE TO DMA
Then press "OK"

its me again, like i told you it did open it very fast(the file or disk) but it still isnt recording it very fast. like i said its like i'm watching it just cant hear the sound. any other ideas on why it is going so slow?

What burning engine/programs did you burned with? I'd still say it looks like DMA issues. Are you multi-tasking? Do you have any other programs open/running in the background while encoding and burning? Just out of curiousity, what are your computer specs and how many Memory Ram do you have? If it's Nero, then copy and paste the very last section inside "NeroHistory" and edit out your Nero serial. Now post it here, so we can see what's behind the issue here. To get your Nero log, go here: C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory for Nero 6 or C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory for Nero 7.

The HP Writer seems like it doesn't like those dics or has a problem reading them...
You could try updating your firmware:

There are 6 updates, so be careful on which one to flash your drive with...

I just bought Nero 7 and tried a test using Shrink and Recode. My specs are as follows:
Shuttle ss56v2.0
P4 3.0 GHZ (NOT prescott processor)
1GB RAM
300 GB USB2.0 external drive
120GB GB INternal Drive
Sony DRU 800a internal DVD drive
Windows XP SP2
DVD43 3.6.2.111
I "backed up" a copy of Kung Fu Hustle using both programs and my results were:
Shrink 58 minutes and 45 seconds
Recode 29 minutes and 30 seconds
Recode is the winner hands down. However, the only problem I noticed with recode is that it has a different byte size for single layer discs. I tried to backup Pulp Fiction directors cut and shrink managed to get it down to size where recode couldn't. And if I tried to change the size in recode to match shrink, it asked me for a dual-layer disc after the initial read. SO it looks like shrink is the winner as far as compression and making a DVD9 fit on a DVD5 bit recode is the clear speed winner.

Did you change your target size in Recode, you can customize it to what you want. I have never had a problem fitting a disk.

What kind of media are you using? You need to update your burner's firmware so it'll be able to read/recognize the media and its manufacture id.

Even if you're getting a successfully burned from the log you provided, it looks like your burner doesn't really like those blank media you're using. High quality media are Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (made in japan) <-- these are my top 3 choices - you can't go wrong with them.

The newest firmware should be fine, but should take precautions. Sometimes hacked firmwares cause more harm than good. You could use System Restore to create a restore time prior to flashing/upgrading the firmware.
When I suggested you lower the target area, the main purpose is to instruct Nero not to burn too close to the edge of the disc. Many people forget to set the target which could affect the viewing of the movie. If it's working our for ya, then I wouldn't worr too much. However, if you're dealing with a long movie, then it would be wise to set the target area.
By upgrading to the last version of Nero 6, this could be beneficial because it may have fixed some buggy errors that some users experienced. As long as your Nero was purchased or came with your burner, then you can just install it over the previous version without any fuss. Also, if your serial number isn't legit, installing the newer version may prevent you from using Nero.
