I think you'll find that Nero recode2 is going to be your best option.
For the files you have downloaded i would suggest that you bypass Nero and use vso DivX to dvd and then use recode to burn it to disc.I know Nero has the ability to encode but of late a lot of people are finding that the encoding tool that Nero uses is causing more trouble than anything. This is a preference thing with me but ultimately it is your choice.

For burning entire dvd or multiple dvds on a single disc, use Nero Recode. For other burn jobs, use Nero Burning Rom as much as possible.

I have allways liked Nero vision express . even though its slow . but since changeing to Nero 7 . Its way to slow , It took about 14 hours to to convert a 3 hour video to dvd . Nero 6 would have done it in about 5 hours , and winavi takes about 1 1/2 hours

deep analysis is really good and makes a better quality dvd but unfortunately it also take shit tins longer to do.

If you did a clean install the defrag shouldnt take that long but i'd still do one anyway.

Your ram , well i'm running 2 x 512 pc 400

The files you are converting are AVI arent they. How does mainconcept mpeg encoder go for you.

Divx to dvd only takes up to an hour to encode per 700meg of video/audio file

The files im converting are XviD files / AVI .

main concept mpeg encoder ? Ive never heard off the app .

1 hour to encode 700mb sounds good . How is the quality for DivXtoDVD ? Is it as good as Nero vision express ?

its only as good as the original source file but if i had to pick between the 2 programs, DivX to dvd to encode wins hands down and Nero recode wins as the burning app
