Back it up no good with Matshita UJ 840 D HELP!!

We have a Matshita UJ 840D in my Sony Vaio laptop. I can make DVD's and CD's with no problem but wanted to lock the DVD's with a password. So, I looked through all of the Nero stuff and found that Back It Up allows you to make a password, but whenI choose the Matshita recorder, it tells me that its not supported. Emails back and forth to support resulted in them telling me that it should be supported and that its probably the firmware ( 1.0 currently). But I don't understand why I can burn with no problem with the existing firmware.

Can anyone help?
