I have burned a few movies so far, and readily admit I am a newbie to this whole process. I have Nero and I notice that when the movies are burned, they look excellent when played on the computer, but when played on my tv, they look washed out, the colour is nowhere near as good as when on the computer. Why is this? Is there a way to fix or improve this? A dvd bought from the store looks fine on my tv, but the burned ones dont. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Funkynassau

I use the Nero Express and burn the image that's on my hd to the disk. Is there a better way to do it? The movies look great on the computer and not so great on the tv.

Thanks,

I have the cake box of 100 dvds, the label is gone, so I dont know the brand name...they are your standard dvds. I have the dvd player that is on the tv and my son has a X Box that will play dvds and it's hooked up to his own tv, he says the movies are not as good on his tv as they are on the computer, so that's 2 tvs where the quality is not so hot. When I rent a dvd from the movie store, it looks fine on my tv, that's all I have to compare it to.

@funkynasa, What program do you use to encode the movie. Is it Recode 2, Shrink, or something else. Both have quality enhancements that really do a fantastic job and compressing and Dvd 9(Dual Layer) to Dvd 5 (single layer). I use Rebuilder Pro/CCE Basic, CloneDVD 2, Recode2, and Intercopy 3 as my progs. to handle compression. Another question is Download dvdidentifier and that will identify what type of media: Brand, Manufacturer, Capable burn speeds...
How fast are you burning? Recommend 4x burn speed, also If it is +R media then use Nero Burning Rom to bitset the dvd from +R to -R (-R works in a larger variety of players.) I stop using Nero Express and primarily use Nero Burning Rom...Is your Nero up to date, the latest updates are on the home page of AD. Honestly, After I run a movie through those list of progs. (especially Dvd Rebuilder) I cannot see the difference between that and the original, and that is viewing the copy on a 55 inch 16X9 HDTV. I would suggest as well perhaps switching media: Look at Taiyo Yuden, Verbatims, Sony's and FuJi's (made in Japan) Even the verbs will be made in Taiwan, but the are awe-some...If I burn Dual Layer I use DVD Decrypter (Free) and use the Iso Read and Write method. My Dual Layer choice is Verbatims DL. Burn them at 2.4x. CloneDvd2 can be DL from www.slysoft.com, I have AnyDVD running in the background (It is worth the money you pay out!) right now I believe www.slysoft.com offers a special if you buy CloneDVD 2/AnyDvd combo. AnyDVD makes all movies seem non-encrypted and then you use any other program to encode it and then burn with Nero, Copy To Dvd, Decrypter (ISO only), and several others.
Have fun and let us know what your media identifies as!

I fully believe I am just not doing this right! I admit to being a total newbie, which is likely the majority of my problem!

I download movies onto my hard drive and then I open Nero Express and tell it to burn the image to the dvd disk. I dont do anything else. What I think I need is a primer to explain what all those abbreviations you folks mention actually mean!

I just finished downloading Cute DVD free trial and it burned Transporter and Armageddon in under 5 minutes each, which blew me away! However they only work on the computer, they dont work on my tv or in my son's X Box setup. I have no idea what type of file they are now. Is there a way to change them into something that is viewable on a tv?

Bearing in mind I am a newbie, dont laugh too hard at me, we all had to learn at some point! What am I supposed to do with the movie file when it's first downloaded from the net? I uses Ares. Does it need to be recoded at that point before it's burned onto a dvd? If so, what program do I use and what do I want it to be saved as?

Is there somewhere online that a newbie like me can start at Square One and learn how to do this? I find it very frustrating so far.

Thanks in advance,
Funkynassau

@funkynasa, I do not download movies and burn them, but there are others here at AD who have and are very successful. It does sound like you are burning them very fast. Media plays a major part of successful burning, but also the speed of that burn. Do you know how fast they are being burnt? Sorry about the clutter of progs and other things in my last post, just get carried away. Don't worry there are some amazing people here at AD that do a great job burning from downloads, I don't so I'm not the expert but I knowsomeone else will speak up. Be patient.

I had been burning them at the slowest speed possible, til I got the upgrades for Nero yest., and there does not appear to be an option to select speed, it's set to Max. If there's a way to slow it down, I'd like to know what it is!

I can burn a music cd with the best of them and it annoys me that a dvd is so much more complicated!

I appreciate you trying to help me, I am open to all suggestions and advice.

@funkynasa - haven't read the entire thread yet, just your last reply so far... In Nero you should always put a blank disc in burner before hitting the burn button otherwise Nero cannot determine the burn speeds and will always pick Maximum - not good

I went to the store where I bought the burner and told the clerk of my troubles, he asked what brand dvds I used, and it is the same brand he uses and his come out fine, so it's not likely the disks. I said I had the up to date Nero, so not that. He said it's likely the burner unit itself so I said ok, I am returning it tomorrow, and I will do just that.

I left the store and went to the local computer shop and bought a Sony dvd burner. I havent had a chance to try it, that's on tomorrow's list too. So fingers crossed this solves my problems, rather than creating new ones!

Could be the burner, and it could be the MEDIA. Just because a store clerk agrees with you on media selection doesn't make that media good. Come on, he's trying to sell you something.

Now if you would have mentioned a manufacture of ths discs name, or better yet ID the media with the free programs already suggested, we could have ended this mystery as to if it is MEDIA related or not. Sometimes ppl will do major hardware changes rather than just trying some good media. ??? Just 1 Verbatim as asked. Oh well, hope the new drive works out for you. Media choice can make the biggest difference in quality of movie, or if it even gets burnt at all.

As to the dl of movies, most movies on the web are in AVI or some other format like DivX to shrink the size, and have to be converted to a file that will play on a stand alone before you burn it to a disc. Avi2Dvd will do that, and i think it is free, though it may be a bit complicated. Haven't used it very much, but i remember it worked perfectly when i did use it. Some movies on the net are in different formats than what you may be viewing, and that causes problems also (NTSC vs PAL).
Burning DVDs is a whole nuther animal compared to burning CDs. You have to get everything just right, and then it goes smoothly. You are going to have to read several guides. No one single guide is going to do it. Your going to have to learn several programs. Nothing is going to go right at first, but slowly you will start to be more successful, and soon you will be ripping up there with the best of them. But,, its going to take time and effort on your part, if you want to do it correctly. All the guides are available, just pick which programs you are going to use, and read a guide or two on it. If things get to be too much of a bother, you can always pay full price for a movie, and get excellent quality.

I dont know what brand the disks are as they came in the cake box thing and when opened the label came off and was thrown out. They were not a brand name like Sony etc. The burner was cheap, it was from whatever Radio Shack calls itself now. It was the first time I'd ever bought cheap hardware and I should have known better than to buy their own brand of something. I went to the store planning to buy the Verbatim dvd rw, and when talking to the clerk he said it was likely the burner and there is 15 days to return it with no hassles, so I decided back it was going and I'd get a better make from a computer store where I know the owner and that he'll stand behind things if I have a problem. It was only $10 more than the cheap one. Today I will try it and see what happens. You sound irritated with me and while I do appreciate your help, and would like you to continue to help me if you like, I dont need you annoyed with me. I made a decision to buy what I hope is a better piece of hardware. I'll send in a report on this new one later today.

Thanks

@funkynasa - just gonna speak on MaxBurn's behalf here - he's not irritated with you at all, it is a very true statement that some ppl out there will indeed rip out half their hardware rather than switch discs, a lot of us advocate good media but some ppl out their outright refuse to switch from questionable stuff or try good stuff, that's all. (not saying you're doing that but media is one of the most important aspects of burning)..

Thanks, I understand what you are saying but Radio Crap has never been known for selling quality products and I do plan to buy the Verbatim dvd, I was not dismissing that idea at all!

I made a pretty successful dvd today, I used the Sony burner and a Memorex dvd rw. The quality on the tv is not quite as nice as on the computer but it's definitely better than previous attempts so I am pleased so far...

funkynasa,
Sorry if i came across irritated. You have a much better burner now with the Sony. I have seen where ppl out right refuse to try different media, and it is the easiest and cheapest thing to change. Will try to tone down my remarks, and maybe get some sleep. Glad you are getting good burns now. The Verbatims will be a great choice of media. I guess i am getting grumpy in my old age.

One other thing i forgot to mention on quality of movies. Have you tried a Dual Layer disc yet? It lets you do a straight copy DVD9 to DVD9 with no loss of picture quality at all. I almost forgot about those. You need a DL capable drive but the quailty is worth it. I took Apocalypse Now Redux and ran it thru shrink. Even loosing extras, I was still getting around 50% compression on the movie. Then i remembered i had some Verbatim DLs. Put one in the drive and did a DVD Decrypter ISO read/write. Movie is perfect. And I was able to get these Verbs at $2.00 each.

Hey, dont worry about it. I think we can get along on here nicely! A couple of reasons I took the first burner back - you only get 15 days to return it with no hassle if it doesnt suit you. It was day 13 when I decided to return it. I live in the boonies and cant be running back and forth to town all the time, so I figured I'd get rid of it while I could, and go for a brand name and stack the odds in my favour. The owner of the store I got the Sony at knows me, I feel better buying things there. I bought the Memorex dvd rw because Radio Crap didnt have any Verbatims.

So, how do I know if my disks are DL? I thought I saw that on the label on the cake box, but the label is now gone.

What I have to do now is format a small spare hard drive I have and put it in the puter and it can be for the temp files etc. I'll let you know how things go once I get that done.

Thanks

@funkynasa, I would use dvdidentifer just to show you what media you use, manufacturer, and dvd 5 or dvd 9. I use Verbs as DL and it is printed on the disk, but if not then I would use that free prog.

Usually the easiest way to tell a DL disc is by the price(at least double the price of a DVD5). They cost at least 2 bucks each if they are Vebatims. Your drive has to be capable of burning DLs, but is basically gives you almost double the capacity on a single disc. It does this with 2 layers hince the term Dual layer. The Verbatim pack says DVD+R DL on it, and has 8.5Gb of data, 240 minutes video. I use them on movies that even when selected as movie only, still come up with compression at 50% or more. Lord of the Rings trilogy is one case where DLs are best for the back-up.
This link does a very good job of describing the various types of discs out there.
http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/dvd2.htm
I linked the middle of the article as that page shows the different DVD structures. I have just recently discovered the wonderful world of DLs. And the price seems to be coming down to a more reasonable level.
You were correct in returning your drive. It is best to work with something good, rather than trying to make something bad try to work. Radio Crap is the only option for some ppl in small rural towns, and i feel for you. Sometimes they carry good stuff, but when they do, it is usually way over priced.
Give those DLs a try sometime, if your drive can handle DL burns. Your movie should come out exactly like the original as you are not compressing anything, and don't even need shrink for the operation(DVD Decrypter will handle it just fine) Good luck, and keep on burning.
