For some reason, my LG DRD8160B can play most DVDs and CDs just fine - except for DVDs that I burn myself with my DVD burner. Why? Those burnt DVDs work fine in my other computers, but not in my LG DRD8160B drive.

What's the brand name of model # of your DVD-RW drive?

What brand name/format/and speed rate is your blank media?

Use this free handy tool to find the MID code on those blank discs:

That LG rom just may not like that format or even that brand of media you are burning.

The DVD-RW is LG GSA-4160B ( http://tinyurl.com/8fgqo )

The blank media is 16x by Memorex.

I also tried a 8x DVD-R by Verbatim, and that didn't work as well.

You may want to update the firmware on your LG 4160b. Also see if there is a firmware about booktyping on your lg burner. That dvdidentifier program will tell you the firmware.

That LG burner should be able to booktype the plus format to dvd-rom.This booktyping fools stand alone players/game consoles/and pc dvd-rom drives into recognizing your backups. Some burn programs can also set the booktype.

What programs do you use to rip/encode/and burn on your dvd backups?

Media quality can contribute to this, along with format.Your dvd-rom sounds very picky.

Memorex: Not a high quality media.Usually mostly cmagnetics crap.Use the dvdidentifier to find that MID code.Burn speed is also a factor on 16x media. Keep it down to 4x.Post back that MID code!

Verbatim -8x should be very good media.Maybe your lg rom don't like the dash format off your 4160 drive. Try some quality plus format 8x like maxell/fuji/sony and look for made in japan on those labels. The japanese media from those 3 brands are taiyo yuden and hitachi, top notch stuff!

You just have a compatability issue.Your other drives confirm those backups are ok,just that lg 8160b is a picky drive. You'll have to find the right format/burn speed/and MID code of media for it to play.Booktyping would be the best option,so post back that info I asked for and maybe we can get that sucker to booktype.

But the DVD-ROM can read manufacturer DVDs (from major companies, like movie DVDs) just fine. I've tested at least a dozen DVDs now.
