I have a bunch of mp3s in filename format <Track> <Artist>--<Title>. I intend to run them through a mass tagger to tag them up according to the filename. I've converted all the tags to v2. My questions are:

1) Does an mp3 file always have a tag (not necessarily completed, but a reserved area nonetheless) ?
2) If you have a v1 tag and you copy it to v2, does this create two separate tags or somehow convert the v1 to v2 leaving no v1 tag ?

I'd like to get to a situation where a device with v2 support will show the full information, yet a v1 device will still show something too.

Any help or pointers appreciated.
