Does this site have something against newbies? I haven't had (1) reply regarding this thread. What am I doing wrong here. Not even (1) reply??? There are several other threads besides mine where not one person has bothered to respond. I guess this site just isn't very user friendly.

Unlike Shrink Nero does not do copy protected disks, you either must rip first using DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter and then use Recode just as you would Shrink. Or use AnyDVD in the background and then Recode will work just like Shrink only faster. Recode is an excellent program and made by the same developer as Shrink.

If as it seems you posted both those questions on the same day your in a bit of a hurry, are'nt you. Don't forget this forum is populated by ppl from different time zones so while it may be daytime where you are it may be the middle of the night where others are. Anyway you kind of answered the question yourself, Recode can't process copyright disks directly. A lot of ppl having copied their disk to HD will then use Recode to process it because it has options not available with shrink as with recodes ability to output DVD streams for use on the PSP. It really depends on what you need/want to do and personal taste. Read up on the Recode manual for its uses and then decide yourself.

Both DVD Shrink and Nero Recode 2 are created by the same author/developer or programmer. However, I prefer Nero Recode 2 better because it's much faster -- in addition, it updates regularly and it's more advanced. Nero Recode "can not" encode encrypted dvd, so you'll need DVD Decrypter (free - arguably still the best ripper) and DVDFab Decrypter (free - one of the best ripper) to rip into your hard drive first. On the other hand, you can run AnyDVD (one of the most talkabout encrypted protection cracking engine here at afterdawn.com) or DVD43 (free encrypted protection cracking engine)

Go here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/256436 for a whole guide on Nero Recode 2, DVD Decrypter and Nero Burning Rom. I wrote that guide for Newbies on how to backup a dvd movie (DVD9) into a single DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R or DVD-RW disc. Enjoyed it and happy burning..!!

Thanks to all of u for your advice. Yes, I might be a bit impatient.
Dvd Decrypter does not work on my computer. When I try to install it, it make my system crash. I do have AnyDVD running in the background. I guess i just don't know how to run recode as opposed to dvd. Also, can anyone help me with the drivers? Even after i uninstall the secondary driver and restart, it still shows in the PIO mode. Should i uninstall Roxio. I'm really confused. Please help.

Yes, I recommend you to uninstall Roxio immediately. It'll only make you to produce more "coasters" down the road, especially if you're burning with Nero (and or have Nero installed on your system.) Inquiry to Nero Recode, just follow the guide I provided above and you'll be set to go.

((To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" its driver ?for Win XP users? by alkohol))

Here are some helpful pictures for references.

A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER," left click on "PROPERTIES"

B) left click on "HARDWARE," left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"

C) left click on + sign of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

D) double left click on either ?Primary? or ?Secondary IDE Channel?

E) left click on "DRIVER," left click on "UNINSTALL"

You will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system," just click "OK," now "SHUTDOWN" or "Restart" your computer
F) once you restarted your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner?s drive and re-install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!!

**NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "Uninstall" it from the ?DVD/CD-ROM Drives?

****at Device Manager****
(A) left click on + sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives
(B) double left click on your DVD burner or your DVD-ROM drive
(C) click on "DRIVER," "UNINSTALL," "OK" and then "Shutdown" or "Restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!!

Thanks alkohol. I have tried both of these steps that you have suggested, and on my secondary drivers is still says PIO in the
"current transfer mode". Transfer mode does say DMA if available. Any other suggestions?

If it says to use DMA if available but is stuck in Pio mode, you will probably have to uninstall the entire ide channel (either primary or secondary), not just the driver. Just R click & choose remove or highlight and choose remove. Then reboot. Windows will discover it as "new hardware found" and DMA should be back on.

Thanks stanh1000. When u say remove the entire channel and not just drivers, i'm a bit confused. When I r clicked on Ide/ata/atapi, it said to scan for new hardware/properties. I didn't have the option to remove. Also, just for fun I clicked on scan for new hardware, and it comes up "Found New Hardware wizard". This wizrd helps you install software for ipod service. Funny, this pops up on my screen everytime i reboot. This has been happening for some time now. I have wondered many times how to get this removed. Any suggestions?
I'm not sure if it is related to my original problem, stuck in PIO mode. Please asvise..

R click or highlight the particular channel, primary or secondary that is stuck in Pio mode. Look at the pics above. The channels are under the ide/ata controler category of Device Manager.

If my guide and arniebear's guide (both our guide are basically the same) did not bring/enable your DMA back on, then it's obvious that there is definitely something wrong with your computer. Honestly, I can "uninstall" any of my driver(s) using my guide and it will automatically turns DMA back On. Ironically, in your case, it's still shows PIO Mode and that is strange indeed.

I'm afraid I don't have any more clue now in regards to enable DMA back on. Hopefully someone will be able to troubleshoot/help you in due time.

i wonder if any of those 'virtual drives' are installed. was involved on a thread with a similarly frustrated poster in last few days with same problem, turned out to be one of those virtual drives at fault - see here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/256008

How's it going buddy? Yeah, that's what I was wondering myself too, how come few people (members) just "can not" enable their DMA back on by "uninstalling" the driver(s). Honestly, I've never had any issues uninstalling any of my drivers -- once I restarted my computer, windows automatically detects and install it for me. With that being said, all of my DMA should be "turbo charge" like before.

hi, how's it going... yeah, DMA can be a right royal pain sometimes, however i've never once had DMA go off for me, even when i used/had trouble with bad media, and not when i've persevered (sometime for ages) ripping from real scratched up discs and from real bad media

The only time I have had DMA go off was when I got the new comp and Dell had not enable something in bios, but never had any problems on my other computer. Also, never had any problem uninstalling and then letting windows redetect.

Wow... didn't know someone had posted in so many threads, but anyways. I think you should have Neph or Darth closed a few of them, it's obvious that they're the same issue. I guess we (you, arnie and I) never had/ran into such issues regarding DMA. Mine always been Ultra 5 on Primary and Ultra 4 on Secondary Channel.

Wow!!! I'm amazed that I can't find a solution to my PIO issue. None of these reply's have worked. Oh, well. Someone had suggested I uninstall Roxio. It's not in my control panel. Any other suggestions on how I might find the uninstall. Or should I just delete it?
