I've been using my Panasonic 321 DVD-RAM/-R recorder for about 6 months now and am generally pleased with it. A couple of weeks ago I installed a 120 GB HD so that I can have more room to mess with the large video files that I've been playing with. I'd like to be able to write back and forth to DVD-RAM while editing and then burn a DVD-R. I also have a Panasonic DMR-E20 set top recorder and I'd like to consolidate video from several DVD-RAM disks to one keeper. Sounds simple enough but this isn't covered in the Panasonic manual and I can't find a guide on this forum or elsewhere to help me through the basics.

I'm using Pinnacle's Studio 8 software for video editing and also have Nero 5.5 if that's any help.

I've used Google and visited the Doom9 site and can't find answers there either.

Any help/advice/clues will be appreciated.

Okay.

To start simple, is ther a way to simply take several video clips from a DVD-RAM burned on my set-top DMR-E20, transfer the data to my hard drive, mix and match them, then recopy them back to the DVD-RAM (using my Panasonic LF-D321) and get them to play on my E20? So far, I haven't been able to do even that. Maybe there's something that I'm not transferring properly between systems.

I'm thinking that with Pinnacle Studio 8 video editing/DVD recordng software (S8) I may be able to 1)do my video editing, 2)burn to a DVD-RAM to check it out, then 3)save to my HD and burn a DVD-R from the disk image.

I'm thinking that it should work, even if through some back-door procedure.

I have been able to successfully make a S8 DVD image on my hard drive. I can record this image to DVD-RAM using my internal DVD-RAM/-R drive, click on the .vob file that contains the video data, and watch the video on my computer. However, it doesn't play on my TV from the set-top RAM disk player that I have (Panasonic DMR-E20). Also, I of course can't get the menus that I create to work by simply clicking on the .vob file.

There are several folders that S8 creates when assembling the DVD image, each containing several files with unfamiliar (at least to me) filename extensions. Similarly, if I record a program onto a DVD-RAM disk using my E20, and read it using my internal DVD-RAM drive, I see several folders. The files in the folders on the RAM disk that does play on my E20 have some of the same filename extensions as those created by S8 for the DVD image, but with diferent filenames.

I've tried changing filenemes, putting different files in the root directory, etc., but haven't gotten anything to work for my E20 (see details below).

With all of the hacks around, I'm hoping that someone familiar with the DVD file requirements can enlighten me and other readers of this thread as to what files to place in which directories and/or how/what to manipulate to produce a DVD-RAM disk that will play on a set-top player (like my Panasonic DMR-E20). I think that there is a real need and a market to be satisfied here as we DVD-RAM owners begin using the power of rewritable DVD technology.

THE DVD-RAM DISK CREATED BY THE E-20 CONTAINS

One folder named Dvd_rtav and 3 files:Vr_mangr.bup, Vr_mangr.ifo, and Vr_movie.vro. The vro file is large and contains the video. It can be played using MPEG2 software.

THE S8 DISK IMAGE CONTAINS:

Root Directory is named DVD
I?ll mark subfolders with * and sub-subfolders with **. Filenames are marked by -. Comments are in [brackets]. FNE=Filename extension

*DVDTmp
-anchor
-dir
-file
-menupgc
-title.vol
-titlepgc
-tmap
-tmpptt
-volume
*Menus [empty]
*mpi
-bmp2vob.mpi
-output.log [contains a lot of data in text w/o comment/explanation]
*Video_ts
-Anchor
-Video_ts.bup
-Video_ts.ifo
-Video_ts.vob
-Volume
-Vts_01_0.bup
-Vts_01_0.ifo
-Vts_01_0.vob [This file contains the animated menu]
-Vts_01_1.vob [This large file contains the video]
*vmgm
-title.vmg
-video_ts.cel
[6 additional video_ts files with FNE s map, nvt, pgc, vbu, vob and vos]
-video_ts1.aud
[5 additional video_ts1 files with FNE s dsi, nv, nvt, pci, and spt]
*video_ts1.aud
**menu
-vts_1m.cel
[6 additional vts_1m files with FNE s map, nvt, pgc, pal, vbu, and vos]
[vts_1m1.aud and 8 additional vts_1m1 files with various FNE]
[9 vts_1m2. Files that are same in size and FNE to the vts_1m1 files above]
[vts_1m1.vob and vts_1m2.vob play the same animated menu as the Vts_01_0.vob file]
*titles
-title.vts
-vts_01_1.aud
[5 additional vts_01_1 files with FNEs the same as the video_ts1 files]
-vts_1t.cel

WHAT I DID TO TRY TO TRICK THE SYSTEM

1) Created a folder named Dvd_rtav
2) Copied the Vts_01_1.vob, Vts_01_0.ifo, and Vts_01_0.bup into this folder
3) Renamed the files Vr_movie.vro, Vr_mangr.ifo, and Vr_mangr.bup, respectively.

The E20 returned an error message and the disk could not be played on that unit. However, even with the .vob file renamed to Vr_movie.vro, it still plays on my computer from the RAM disk. If I click on the .ifo file it returns a bunch of ASCII characters, but the words DVDVIDEO-, VMG, and Pinnacle are readable.

Is there a simple way to manipulate the files to get the .vob to .vro, then back again, maybe by changing a few lines? Since this would be done on RAM or my HD, nothing is lost while I'm on the learning curve.

Alternately, is there a software program out there that does the work for me? Freeware or shareware would be great.

Sorry if I provided too much detail, but it's hard to know what helps and what is fluff.

Thanks for your response. As I said, a clue as to where to find info will be helpful. There must be other users out there with a need to work with DVD-RAM files.
