NEC 1300 won't write to sony dvd-rs

I have an NEC 1300 - firmware 1.0C - set up as an external drive on my laptop running XP. I have had no problems with the drive until I recently tried to burn to some new Sony dvd-r's. The dvd-rs are Sony 4.7gb, accucore, ver.2.1/ 1x-16x. In Roxio and Copytodvd, the discs are recognized, but when I try to burn a disc I get a "05 30 05" error and it won't burn. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

You should consider flshing your firmware to the newest version. The firmware is available here:

This may or may not solve your problem. This is a very old burner in burner years. Since the new NEC and BenQ DL burners cost about $40US, you might consider an upgrade and leave your troubles behind. However try the firmware upgrade first. It's possible your burner just doesn't know what to do with the newer media. Remember 16X media was just a dream when your burner was engineered. :) You could also just use older 4X media that your burner probably recognizes.

Thanks for the info. Which firmare is the newest. I have 1.0C right now, which I thought was up-to-date. Is the 1.16 useable on this drive, or another.

Hi there,
Do not burn above 4x.
What speed did you try to burn those ?
Check in the logs, what see what's the MEDIA ID for those disks.
If they are made by CMC Mag. those are cheap quality.
Try some Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim.

Sorry, Doc, I just saw 1.0 without the C and assumed it was the original firmware. My bad. Doc, I'd try some other media first to determine whether it's just that particular Sony media or something else entirely. The 05 30 05 error can be generated by incompatible media. Is your version of CopyToDVD up to date? If you're backing up commercial dvds, have you tried using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink instead? Both are free programs available here:

If you want to post your CopyToDVD log taking out your name and any serial numbers, we'll look at that and see if anything reveals itself.

Doc, the 1.0C firmware was apparently last updated on 9/15/04, over a year ago. That's the most recent version. It's fairly likely the burner isn't happy with the media. According to the media database, those are probably Made In Japan Sony disks and should be excellent. Your burner possibly just doesn't know what to do with them.

Thank you all for your help. I went out and bought some cheap Maxell dvd-rs, and the work fine. I guess the drive's just not up to the challenge of new, quality media. I guess I'll just stick to the brands I know work, and think about making the upgrade. Again, thanks for all of your advice.
