Hello all,

I recently built my dream PC about 3 months ago and everything was dandy. But then I got a new career and now need my PC for using apps like 3D Studio Max. This involves a lot of rendering which is really CPU intensive. While the FX-57 performs pretty good would it be prudent at this point to go for a dual-core CPU? The FX-57 was designed with games in mind and now I don't use the PC for games anymore. I was thinking of the X2 4400+ or 4800+. The problem I have now is that while rendering my CPU is at 100% load and makes doing other tasks very slow (especially dispplaying or editing high res images). Also with a dual core I believe I can have 2 render threads speeding it all up which would be great.

My rig: Intel Q9650 3.0Ghz, ATI Radeon 4870 X2 2048Mb, 6Mb DDR2 6400 RAM, Asus Rampage Formula X48 Motherboard.

Id personally stick with the FX for now as i keep on hearing about "issues" with the X2s if you are planning on getting an X2 id wait until they bring out the new range thats compatible with DDR2 they should be around early 2006 but this will mean getting a new DDR2 mobo

Studio Comp: AMD Athlon XP 3200+ OC ~ 2.35GHz runs at 40 celcius idle and 48 under stress (aerocool GT1000 really works!), Asrock K7VT4A , 1024MB Dual Channel DDR 400, MSI Nvidia FX5200 128MB OC ~ 600MHz mem 350MHz core,80GB SATA + 200GB SATA + 120GB IDE, 7.1 Channel Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum EX sound and midi interface. 19" Sony SDM-HS95 TFT monitor - sweeet
Comp2: AMD Sempron 2400+ OC ~ 2.0GHz (Stable), Asrock K7S41GX, 512MB DDR 333, Onboard Graphics, 40GB Maxtor IDE

set of monitors on the way soon :P

I would swap for the dual core, I have noticed a big improvement on multitasking.
If however you you only run 1 app at a time, then no need to bother.
The 4800+ will easily overclock to 2.7 as well, which will basically nearly give you twice what you already have as the FX is clocked at 2.8.
