I have a TDK 404N burner and recently upgraded to Nero 7. Following advice here, I didn't install INCD, and uninstalled Itunes. I used forceaspi to get consistent drivers. Running WIn XP, with 1 Gig ram. Can burn data CD's, but the burner consistently fails at DVD's, either video or data. Firmware is up to date. Using TDK (mfr ID TDK Corp, TTH02), supposedly will tolerate 16x. COnsistently get illegal disc error. Log follows:

Your log looks pretty clean, except a few things.
Quote:
Physical memory : 1023MB (1048036kB)
Free physical memory: 241MB (247060kB)
Memory in use : 76 %
You have tons of memory, yet you have very little left (it should be ok), but try to release/free up more by going to START, RUN and type msconfig, click on Startup and disable any unnecessary running programs in prior to burning. Another way to free up more memory is "ctrl+alt+del" and on Processes, you'll need to End Process on any applications/programs that you don't really needed.
Quote:
Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB)
Last address to be written: 1470223 (326:42.73, 2871MB)
What's wrong here..?? What are you trying to burn? This doesn't look right, it should be at least 4360MB or 4401MB at the max.

Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: TTH02 -
TDK is barely an OK media. I recommend you to use high quality such as Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (made in japan) for your next dvd burning project.

Again, your burner doesn't like the media you're using. See above reply for higher quality media.

Try 4X next time. Sometimes burning too low like 1X or 2X can be a pain as well. I've always burned all my backups at 4X and I've never made any "coasters".

You really need to get Roxio Zapper and completly wipe out Roxio from your system. It will only conflicts with your Nero and therefore you're getting coasters. Go here http://www.downloadjunction.com/product/store/15199 and download it to clean/wipe out Roxio immediately.

Here is a successful burned log of mine, you can compare mine to yours and see what's wrong.

Well, I ran the Roxio Zapper and did a fresh reboot to get more memory. Can't burn faster than 2.4x (presumably burner won't go faster). I'm burning less than a full DVD of data (photos). I was easily able to smaller batch of photos to a CD earlier today.

Here's another log file. In the meantime, I'll study yours to see if I can figure anything else out. I also left a message for Nero support.

After I bought the DVD's, I noted they are not held in high regard here. But I figured since it was a TDK burner...

If I can't find anything else, I'll go out and buy some others (I understand verbatim are supposed to be good).

I don't know, but mine is "not" set to "Multisession" and mine is "FALSE". Other than that, your log looks pretty clean. I've checked with your burner's firmware and it seems to be current. However, the below log shows that your burner still doesn't like the media you're using that's all. Perhaps the below is the problem, plus the "Multisession". It's a good thing that you've got Roxio out though because Nero and Roxio tend to conflict one another. Honestly, all I can say is to try with other media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or Maxell (made in japan), and hopefully you'll get a successfully burned next time.

You were absolutely right, Alkohol. It was the media. I bought a few Verbatim discs, and was able to burn at 4X without difficulty. Then I tried a TDK again - Nero thought the maximum speed was 2.4x (they are supposed to be 16x discs) - and again I got the illegal disc error. It is interesting that the TDK drive doesn't tolerate the TDK media. NOte - would I have been better off if I had purchased 4x or 8x media? My burner is only capable of 4x for DVD's anyway.

I'll leave a message for TDK as well.

Many thanks for your patience and assistance.

@Joe

You're welcome buddy. You can get 8X Verbatim -- they should be fine. Meaning your burner should burn them at 4X regardless, this is the best and safest way to burn dvds anyways. Even if I have the 16X Verbatim DVD+R "Advanced Azo", I'd still burned them at 4X only.

Yeah, ironically it's interesting isn't it? However, keep in mind that sometimes burner's can be a different name, but was manufactured by another brand/company. For example: my Sony DRU 710A is actually a rebadged Lite-On 1633S burner.

Anyways, I'm glad you were able to have a successful burned after changing media to Verbatim. Yes... for all of my dvd burning projects/backups, I only let genuine Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, and Maxell (made in japan) touches my burner.

I remembered I used to produced "coasters" long ago when I was using TDK and few Memorex aka CMC MAG (roughly 2 years ago), but since I changed to Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (m.i.j), I've never seen any "coasters".

Happy burning...!!
