I have 3 kids that have 2 PS2s, and Xbox, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy SP and so on... Now for Christmas they want a PSP. The games for this thing is $50 and movies are $20! Is this really worth the money? What else does this thing do for kids? I have seen some threads about making back-ups or something for games and movies. Can you do this also? Thanks

If you want to just let them play games and movies straight from original discs without worrying about homebrew or anything like that it's worth it. If you are going to buy it with the intention of backing up games and movies it's a lot of trouble and takes time to learn. All that playing backups and homebrew is geared more towards adults than kids. To play backups you need to have the right firmware and either buy a huge memory card, or make or buy and adapter. If you just want to stick to basics, go ahead and get them one. They really are cool. Just don't expect to jump right into backups and homebrew without taking you a while to learn.

Is the PSP? worth the $250.00(USD) + Tax? I douno... =(
At the moment I'd probably be incliend to say no. It depends on what you want to use it for. At the moment a v1.50 is the about the best reasion to have a PSP?. It's a shame when you have to addmit that the Homebrew Scene is better then the Commercial One. And, when I say Homebrew, that's what I mean. No Emulators or stinking *.iso Loaders.
I might consider this for a Child older the 13, but for those under 10 I'd say a GBA should be good enough.
While the AP is correct in saying that File Management on the PSP? is a bit complicated (at first),. I'd say that anyone with a good Windows Explorer expriance should bew able to pick it up instantly. Lord knows this anit the *nix OS!!

It also depends on how old your kids are??? If they are around 10+ it's a great investment! The psp alows you to play MP3s! If you are going to buy a PSP get The GB pack for 50 bucks for it is worth it and cheaper in the long run! You get a 1 GB card in the GB PACK!!! I would say yes the PSP is worth the mony!!! Especialy if you can find one that is 1.5!!!

I don't think it's worth it, not for $250 at least. I loved my psp when i firs got it but the games weren't that great. Now there are a couple good ones like the new grand theft auto and some rpg's but still. The biggest problem with the psp is that almost nobody i know has one, and the wireless multiplayer is really great but without no one to play with it's worthless. But even that is bad because the person has to have the same game as you. I heard there's a way around that, 2 people can play with just one UMD which brings me to my next point a lot of the things you can do with the psp takes time & patience to learn. The hardest thing for me to learn was how to put videos on my memory stick. At first I thought it was drag&drop like the mp3's but you have to convert your video files in order for the psp to play them. I was surprised at how difficult it was at first since this was one of the main features of the psp.
I was lucky enough to have a version 1.50 which let me play homebrew and some iso's. But for that you would have to buy a 1gb stick which is great and expensive, and if you plan to put iso's in it anything less than a 1gb stick would be foolish. Also homebrew emus for psp suck, most games don't run smooth and it's really annoying when you have to frameskip some parts of the game. I don't know why anyone would buy UMD movie when they have a dvd version for the same price unless they travel.
The PSP will only get better as time goes by but right now i suggest you put it on hold. It is way too expensive and you'll eventually need to buy a bigger memory card. Anything less than a 1gb stick would be a waste of money since you'll eventually want to put more stuff in and you're gonna have to keep erasing stuff to make space. I have a 1gb stick and i find myself always deleting things to make space for other things i want to put in.

For the tecnhology it's worth it but that doesn't change the fact it should be considered a luxury item IMO. If you can afford go for it as long as the kids are responsible enough for a delicate $250 electronics device.

I dunno... I wouldnt get my kids a psp, and theyre in their early/mid teens. Kids are just too clumsy and the psp isnt exactly super durable with the huge screen etc.
tell them to them wait for the ps3 or 360, that'll shut em up :p
btw, I think your kids are spoilt. I hope they behave themselves and do well in school !! I didnt get anything until I was damn 23 years old, had graduated college and finally started working :(
*sobs* :p

I wish my parents would've bought me and my brother separate consoles, it would've saved them lots of arguments between us. But it worked out for the best i guess because in the end you ralize that you don't really need all that stuff, once we started noticing girls better and doing other activities videogames were not all that great anymore. But don't get me wrong I recently bought star wars battlefront and i've been hooked on the online play. And I plan to buy a ps3.

Teriffic points everyone has brought up. The truth is that really aren't many great games for the PSP yet, and it seems to have taken a long time for the good ones to come out. The honest truth is that I've have my unit for 6 months and have never even bought a game. I only rented them. Then when the downgrader came out I went down to 1.5 and now use my unit almost exclusively for homebrew. Also, the point about other people you know not having one is valid. I have several friends who are video game fanataics, but no onw has gotten a PSP yet. For a normal adult trying to make a house payment, car payment, doctor bills and such a PSP really is a luxury item. Even with a bundled pack if you buy a game or memory stick also It's gonna be well over $300. Then again, it's just like anything else. If you REALLY want one you will find a way to get it. All in all the PSP is very nifty, but it doesn't necessarily live up to the hype.

great points stan :) The only reason I ever bought the psp was that I do alot of travelling, and can use it to keep me entertained on the long plane and train trips, not to mention at the hotels(Im a bad sleeper!!) :) In addition, the games I really love on the ps2... FIFA, Tiger Woods, Dynasty Warriors and Burnout have been ported over. All I need is a Final Fantasy Game for the psp and I'll be quite happy !!!
I also use my 1gb memstick duo in both my psp and my sony cybershot camera, so that worked out well too :D

I don't like to think of it as spoiled. I bought one of the PS2 when they first came out and put in the living room for everyone to play. Then I bought the Xbox to go in the living room and put the PS2 in their room. The other PS2 did not work and was gave to me. I took it apart and wiggled the power wire I guess and it now works, so that's how they got those. Like Domreis said.... I do have 3 boys.
Thanks for all the feedback.
