Hi my tosser of a ISP (talktalk) stops me using P2P from 4pm to 12am.
So during these times i have been using mIRC. Is there anyway to increase my download rate , like in settings or anything. Or is mIRC not so good for speed.
There's no real way to speed up IRC downloads.. (btw, its IRC not mIRC, mIRC is just your client you use to connect to IRC)
IRC downloads depend on alotta factors - namely the server/bot sending you the file(s). That server/bot can also be sending 20 other ppl the same file which in turns slows down overall speed. you might get stuck on the short end of the stick, the slower speed. It'll pick up when other ppl's downloads finish but will slow back down again as the server/bot starts sending to more ppl.. Vicious cycle :(
Also, if the bot/server sending to you is on a connection faster than yours, it's forced to slow down to accomdate your connection. One of the faults of how the Net works in general, 2 computers connected together across the Net hafta be using the same connection speed to send a file. So a 100Mbit connection will slow down to accomdate for a 6 Mbit DSL connection.
Anyway, the best advice I can tell you - either find channels that arent as crowded/popular , find bots/servers that dont have huge queues (cause that que generally full) and try waiting a day or 2 to go grab the newest stuff. Another solution is start serving yourself, setup your own XDCC server and start serving in some IRC channel that allows users to run XDCC/Fservers, sooner or later you might be granted access to Private access only bots (which are much faster, less crowded)
