I have a problem with my DVD burner, Lately I'm getting Power calibration errors and failed burns, I never had a problem till I had to reformat and reinstall XP PRO with SP 2. I have updated Nero and dvd frimwear. DVD is sony DRU_710A about a 1 year old. Can you till me what might be the problem. Heres the log from NERO

@Nuttyme

I have the same DVD burner as yours and luckily I've never encountered any issues with "KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR" whatsoever. My Dru 710A BYX5 loves to burn all genuine TY, Verbs and Maxell (m.i.j) that I throw in. Hmmm... your log looks pretty clean, except a few things below.

You need to edit out your Nero serial before any hackers hacked your serial and use it for free.

Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB)
Last address to be written: 2287007 (508:13.32, 4466MB)
You're writing/buring too close to the edge, you need to customize it to 4360MB or at least 4400MB at the max with high quality media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or Maxell (made in japan).
Quote:
Media type: DVD-R

Hmmm... doesn't look too good on the media. The only FUJI media I can trust is their FUJI 8X DVD+R "made in Japan" --> that's genuine Taiyo Yuden media right there. Since your DRU 710A burner is capable of Book Typing DVD+R into DVD-ROM and you've got Nero 6.6.0.18, why don't you try some Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD+R, Verbatim 8X/16X DVD+R or Maxell 8X DVD+R (made in Japan) and have Nero automatically book type them into DVD-ROM? It's more safer that way, not only that, but any of your dvd players can play them easily.

Looks like your burner doesn't really like the media you're using. Again, try some high quality media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (made in Japan) for your next dvd burning project and hopefully you'll have a successful burned.
Quote:
Power calibration error
Meaning either the media is bad, your burner doesn't like the media, and or your burner is having a hard time reading the media. See above reply about high quality media.
Quote:

4X is the best and safest way to go. Even if I used top notch media, I'd still go with 4X. That's the most recommendation speeds here at afterdawn.com.

*NOTE: this is good for DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R DL media and it's for your future dvd burning only.

If you have the Nero Burning Rom or Nero Express set the Book Type to "Automatic" then whenever you use Nero Recode 2, Nero Express or Nero Burning Rom to burn, all your backups will automatically set the book type to DVD-ROM.

((Here's how to Book Type using Nero Burning Rom))

01) open up Nero StartSmart, then click on Nero Burning Rom
02) EXIT out the "New Compilation" when it pops up
03) click on "Chooses A Recorder" (it's a small burner icon next to (I) and the arrow down)
04) click on ?Options," then on "Book Type Settings," set to "Automatic" and click "OK" - that's it... easy as smoking. Now every time when you burn using a DVD+R, DVD+RW or DVD+R DL disc, Nero will ?automatically? change the Book Type into a DVD-ROM format.

Thanks for the reply Alkohol, I have tried every thing you said to try. I have spend the last 2 days tring to get data backed up. I tried burning @ 1x , no luck. on burning to close to the edge, I was tring out recode 2 in Nero, Never messed with it. I like it alot, faster then DVD Shrink. The media is Staples DVD-R and I have burned with then before and burner liked them better,So I stuck with then, Never had a failed burn with then, I have tried maxwell and the burned failed with all but 2 of them out of a pack of 25. The burner loved to burn anything up till about march and started to get failed burns and power calibration error . I fixed that by uninstalling Nero and cleanup all the left over and do a clean install of Nero again and then it would work for a month or 2 and start acting up again, Now I can't it to do anything. Do you think its time to buy another one and have on hand, Staple has the DRU-810A on sale now for 79.95 ? I have no clue what is going on with it, Any other idea why. Thanks for all the help.

@Nuttyme

Before you're going to spend another $79.95 or $80 dollar, let's make sure that your burner is really dead and can no longer burner dvds anymore.

1) let's have one more burn with either a FUJI 8X DVD+R "made in japan" or Verbatim 8X/16X DVD+R, but make sure you set it to burn at 4X speed only. Now post up your Nero log again, so we can take a look at it alright.

2) let's do what Bigfatboy said. Go over http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/diagnostics.htm and test your drive.

Again, "power calibration" meaning it's having a hard time reading/recognizing the media and its MID. Probably because it doesn't like the media you're using.

Well since my last post, I pulled out my sony CDR, They were all stacked ( Bottom CD-Rom, Middle CDR, Top DVDR ) , Thought I would just burn through the dvds I had, Since I really didn't want to drive to staples with 11" of snow on the ground and crazy drivers smacking into each other. I first did my data backup and 4x and it burned just fine, Ok so far so good, Then I tried backing up my copy of sahara with recode 2 , burn @ 4x and backup just fine. I have not tried anything else yet,I will try tonight to backup something else. Now I did use the sony drive check and that failed and emailed results to sony. I used this the first time this happend and that failed back in march, emailed results to sony. No respones from Sony. Now the CD-Rom is connected to the primary cable and the DVD burner is on the secondary cable middle slot now. Before is was on the secondary cable first and CDR on middle. Tomorrow I'll go to staples and see if they carry the FUJI 8X DVD+R "made in japan" or Verbatim 8X/16X DVD+R. Staples is the only store in my town that carries computer media and parts.They carry very little media or computer parts. Heres the log from the data backup that burned

Let me know if you see anything wrong or settings need to be changed, 1 question thou Could Heat in the case cause the DVD burner to give those errors ? I have 3 case fans, 1 in front and 2 in back, and I did remove the sony CDR from the middle slot in the case and left the CD-Rom and DVD where they are.

Thanks,
Nuttyme

Everything (both of your new logs) looks clean and good so far, except the above. Even if you have a successful burned at 4466MB, I'd still recommend to customize it to 4360MB or 4400MB at the max.

Anyways, I'm glad that you were able to have a successfully burned at 4X. Yes.... 4X is the best and safest speeds for burning.

Good luck and happy burning..!!

I don't have the Booktype option (I'm using Nero 6.3). Guess because it's an old version? What real benefit would this have?

@mcb247

Maybe you need to update to the latest from Nero 6 Ultra 6.6.0.18 (remember just download package #1 and #2 only - the rest you don't need them). What kind of DVD burner do you have? Most of Lite-On, Sony, Plextor, BenQ and LG can book type easily.

What's the benefit of book typing? It certainly will play in any home dvd players you throw in. Meaning if you're burning using a DVD+R, DVD+RW or DVD+R DL disc and have Nero "Book Typing" into a DVD-ROM format, then this baby will play in any of your friends, relatives or family members stand alone dvd players regardless of how old is players. Notice all original/commercial dvds are pressed as DVD-ROM? Therefore, any of your top set home dvd players can play them easily.
