OKay well first of all does your laptop have a wireless adapter built in. if it does your pretty much ready to go. if not youll need to get one of theses

http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=NEA-WL100GD
(not specifically that one)

Its a wireless card it will allow you to pick up wireless networks that are nearby and aslong as there not protected you can access them and use the net for free.

However this wont work no matter where you are in the world you need to be within the range of a wireless network signal.

You can also get a 3G card this will allow you to pick up 3G internet no matter where you are but its a bit crappy really

hope this helps

I worked on developing the 3G system in the UK for Vodafone.
I wouldn't describe it as crappy at all.
Obviously depending on coverage, a connection speed of 384K over the phone network is pretty good.
It actually works out at slightly faster than working on ISDN (real world speed), but then it is practically anywhere in the UK 70% coverage.

if you have a broadband connection then you can get a wireless router that will connect to the net without having to use a pc. im not sure if you can get anything like this that will connect to a dial up connection though.

You can use your mobile phone to connect to the net but i wouldnt advise it as its very slow
