Hey all,
Ok here is my dilemma...
I have 2 avi files plus 2 .sub & 2 idx files that I want to convert to DVD. I initially took just the 2 avi files and WInAvi'd them to DVD then DVD shrink then DVD Decryter. The dvd came out with subtitles that cannot be removed. When you watch the original avi files in VLC media player there is no subtitles. I'm tryiong to do it over including the .sub & idx files but I'm gettin popups about having no pin in place and another that I cannot convert certain files. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hey all,
If anyone is interested I figured out the problem, simply create another folder and place only the .AVI files in. I guess deleting the .sub & .idx files would work as well but just in case I moved the AVI files and it worked.
By the way, WinAvi did not do such a great job so I tried dvdsanta but that closed down all the time then I went to VSO DivXtoDVD. That program worked perfectly.
Happy trails.

If an app takes input via dshow, then if you have the subtitles named the same and directvobsub or similar installed, then you will get subs, same as when you playback via dshow.

hey celtic_d,

i tried encoding the subs into the mpeg file while enconding using TMPGEnc by going to the environmental settings and prioritizing the "DirectShow Multimedia File Reader" over the "AVI2(OpenDML) File REader". This forced TMPGEnc to load DirectVodSub and hence to encode the subtitles. However, everytime DirectVodSub loads, TMPGEnc crashes...would you know a solution to this? or maybe an alternate encoder on par with the quality of TMPEnc?

Thanks

Convert .SUB to .SRT with SubTool.

To encode permanent subtitles on an AVI/MPG movie: use VirtualDub.
Yoo must have installed VirtualDub's framerserver (if File___Start Frameserver) isn't available, double click on 'auxsetup.exe' in VirtualDub's directory.

Convert the .SRT subtitle to SSA format (you have to find the right parameters for font size and distance from border; I use Arial 20 and distance from bottom border = 30 to insert the SSA subtitle in SVCD PAL movie (480x576).

Load the AVI; load the Subtitler Filter and, with it the SSA file you made.

Do File___Start Frameserver and save it as movie_subbed.vdr.

Load movie_subbed.vdr insstead of movie.AVI with your favorite encoder (TMPGenc, CCE, whatever).

..but, since you're making a DVD, cannot you make selectable subtitles as explained in http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/convert_avi_to_dvd.cfm ?

hey aldaco12 thanks!
I didn't want to use Avi2DVD to encode the video because i thought that TMPGEnc produced higher quality. I demuxed the subtitles from an mkv file and they are in .ass (not .ssa) format. I can convert them with subtitle workshop to .srt. I tried using DVDLab to add the subtitle but it messed up the imported srt file. it cut off some text and it does not allow overlapping subs in time (my video sometimes has to subs at the same time one on the top to explain some terminology and one on the bottom) So i figured i had to encode the subs directly into the MPEG file. Does VirtualDub re-encode the video? b/c if it does i'm assuming it will result in lower quality.
Thanks
