hi,
i have just purchased a brand new memory stick which is 512mb. but the first time i put it into my pc it said:
USED SPACE: 0 BYTES
FREE SPACE: 468 MB
CAPACITY: 468 MB

I then loaded on some files (before trying on my psp) because i thought it is saying wrong but the files will still fit.
i managed to get files worth of 467.9MB onto the memory card.

I re-formated the memory card into the same format as it was in before (FAT) but it still says: CAPACITY 468 MB

i really need the extra space, please help (i havent even added any blank folders etc.)

is there any solutions, software to check or is it a hardware problem.

any help appreciated

thanks alot for reading :D

First of all, when they say "512 MB", they're probably not counting 1024kb/mb, they're counting 1000kb/mb in order to make it more appealing and easier to count like most companies do (my 256 mb usb drive really has 243 mb). And 2nd, even if they do count correctly, then it has to do with the whole computer-formatting stuff. Ask one of the guys at Best Buy (Geek Squad), they'll probably know. It helps to read the fine print sometimes. BTW, I saw some website not long ago (I think it was www.buy.com where they had a 1gb memory card for $50, but I'm not sure if the sale is still there.

It's Festivus for the rest of us!

I posted a message regarding this a while back cause like the original poster here...I was also wondering what was going on.

If you do a search you might find the post I made....I don't really feel like looking for it tonight.

ok when you create a partition on a usb memory stick it takes 1 kb or more depending on the size of the memory card to format the card so it works with the psp or camera or what ever you are using

im sorry but the memory stick doesn't format at 512megs directly it only formats at 400,489,450 depending on the model of psp you have and what firmware you have

hehe... when it comes to any storage devices, especially portable ones, the number specified never means you'll get that full amount... this related to the physical makeup of the device and data on the device which is written in - it is usuallyto assist formatting and device identification for interfacing with other devices, eg, camera, psp, computer

I would invest in a 1gb card in the least(that was my first purchase right after I got my psp) Places like like ebay and local computer markets/swapmeets have them cheap. DONT EVER buy one from sony because they will charge you twice what you paid for your psp on their official site. They are a bit cheaper than that at places like Eb. And stick to the sandisk ones, which are not only faster but cheaper :)

There is now a 4gb storage device around but they cost just as much as your psp atm!! :p

buy.com got a 1 gig plus memstick/duo adapter for $49 after rebate. And go to spoofee.com to get the $5 off code so all together its roughly $45 bucks for a 1 gig which is proly what agent47 paid for his 512.

MEMORY BEING LESS THAN PRINTED IT'S NORMAL.

You hear me? NORMAL.

NORMAL.

1. Each platter on a HD is X and each platter must match X. It's similar here.
2. Manufacture imperfections are on 99.99999999999999%.
3. The boot sector (the core, system of the drive) are not included when it shows Free Space: BLAH MB.

BUT Sandisk is better than Sony MS.
1. Faster. Tested, and it's faster.
2. SONY 1gbs have like 1022MB, and Sandisk 1gbs have like 1023MB. (yes, 1mb isnt much difference, but think. You could store a whole mod of Attack of the Mutants there!)
3. and yes, neither are perfectly 1GB (1024MB)

PS. OK these sums are just AVERAGES.
PPS. OK, OK. They are MY APPROXIMATES. For more detailed specs, checl out the PDF this dude made when benchmarking the different MS. He has the difference in space to bytes. more accurateth.

I was told to change my sig so I did this.

Isnt the memory suppose to be smaller instead of bigger like a 1 gig MS only has around 940 mb after formating and not 1023 mb.
