Hi!
I have had serious problems when it comes to burning DVD's latly.
When the burning proscess reaches 33%, it stops, and I get "Illegal disk" error.
I have tried several version of nero, and other burning software, I have updated the firmware to the newest, and I have tried serveal DVD's from different brands and tried to burn different files to the DVD. It always stops at 33% :(
I can burn CD's without a hitch thoug...
Anyway, here's the log and info from InfoTool, I am clueless about whats wrong, but I hope some of you know :D

See this? it's missing about 2 lines, your drive isn't recognizing your media.
Try a diff brand and see if that helps. I recommend Taiyo Yuden or Sony or Fuji MIJ. Verbatim is also good.

That cant be the problem, I have burned with older version before...

As I said before, I have burned with these settings before. But how do I change how far it's burning?

I've tried 3 different brands, all with the same error. And these brands have worked before.
I have also tried burning with other software, with the same result.
I'm starting to think that the problem isen't Nero's fault, but some stupid setting in Windows I can't find, or maybe a busted burner.
But thanks for the tips, and keep em coming :D

- ie a 3line paragraph when the firmware's up to date. I don't know how else to say this but the firmware has been neglected by Ricoh since April 2004 (unless their own website has something newer though i very much doubt it), so i can't see a way forward other than to buy a new drive.... your firmware is integral to burning, if it's firmware can't recognise newer media you're gonna have to search high and low for 'older' media that the firmware is able to handle, but it's gonna be easier to spend a few quid/dollars and buy a new drive...

Hmm, I don't think its a firmware-problem, as I have burned succsesfull dvd's from the same pack before. And, it starts to burn, but stops at 33%. If it can't handle the DVD's, why do it start the burning procces, and stops at 33%? It just seems stupid, if Nero knows it can't complete the burn, why do it even begin?
And it's not to easy to buy a new drive, as its a laptop, and they are
expensive and hard to find.
But I appriciate the tips, and I will look for new, or maybe old firmware. And if that dosn't help, I'll reinstall XP...

The reason it's worked before is b/c that was a then, this is now. The media is getting newer but your f/w is staying the same. It's jsut a new generation of media.
It's not really going to be all that more expernsive if you just buy a regular drive (40 bucks at newegg for a quality drive) and a box (20 bucks). So it's really not that much more.

But the media hasen't changed. I'm using DVD's from the same box as before. And I've tried 3 different brand new DVD's also. So it can't be a firmware-problem, it has to be software-related (probally some drivers/files or config thats changed). Do you know about any software or OS problems that can cause this kind of error?

I'm sure you know this stuff better then me, but I think your wrong re. the firmware. As I said, I have succsesfully burned DVD's from the same box of DVD's I am getting error from now. So, unless the DVD's have changed since last time I used them, wich is impossible as they have been sitting on my desk, it cant be a firmware problem. It has to be something else, either a software-problem, OS-problems (drivers and such) or a faulty burner.

I agree with both creaky and GlueEater on this case. What kind of blank media you're using to burn? Most of the errors from above (your log) is either the media you're using is bad, your burner doesn't like the media, and or it's having trouble reading the media. In addition, you do need to update your burner's firmware to increase the burning performance and media compatibility (it will recognize other media and its MID better).
Here is a successful burned log from mine, you can compare them and see if you'll notice any differences.

@psykolef - i'm not wrong re the firmware. but hey, no biggie, the logfiles don't lie, plus i'm not the one with media problems :)
Your burner may well possibly be past it's sell by date, but the point of logfile dissection is we do the easy/cheap stuff first, ie shake a logfile and see what falls out the bottom, then work up from there, basic troubleshooting without costing anyone anything. i don't do lazy troubleshooting ie just say "your burner's broke", i chew up the logfile first, and in the info you've posted, your firmware just isn't cuttin' it. Period. (i'm fine with this, i'm just amused that you don't believe me). if there was newer firmware for you to apply i'd point you towards it, but as i think i said before, if the Ricoh site isn't forthcoming, the firmware just isn't up to date.
i'm gonna step off and watch the thread, well tomorrow as i'm turning in soon, you're entitled to not believe me re the firmware, honestly no biggie to me either way, but i do know my stuff, just meet me half way and we'll have you burning up a storm in no time. just read some of my posts, i'm one of the good guys LOL
ps i hear ya re it being a laptop burner. i have just recently treated myself to a shiny laptop, and even though it's got a brand new dvd burner it's just the same kind of flimsy crap burner i've seen on any other laptop i've ever seen. if mine craps out (which it no doubt will) i'll just hook up to a standard fullsize dvd burner in a USB2 enclosure, standard burners are built to go the distance, so i'm not fussed if this craps out on me

You usually no longer see new f/w once the drive's been obsolete and the makers have given up on it and left it to die. May I ask when you bought your burner and where? But it could just be Ricoh being real lazy.

your burner may indeed be shot/on the way out, but what i'm homing in one is that the firmware is categorically not recognising whichever disc you used (ie pertaining to the log entry at the time, i can't remember what disc you said it was off the top of my head). if you want to/are able to buy a new burner i would urge you to do that, otherwise (as your firmware is lacking, ie you're not getting the 3line paragraph in the log describing the media correctly) you're gonna hae to use 'older media' that your burner can actually recognise.
Again i can't remember without re-reading the thread, what media you're using, but DVD burning quite frankly is one of THE most annoying hobbies out there. Well mainly due to the blank media side of things, ie the disc manufacturers have got us by the painful parts of our lower regions as a lot of stuff out there just isn't consistent. ie you can buy one tub of discs one day and the identical tub you buy another day might have a different manufacturers' discs in the tub. I vaguely recall you saying you used Verbatim, in which case there should be very little chance of this being the case. Here at Afterdawn we don't hear too much about the supposed rebranding of modern Verbatims that's supposed to go on but many ppl over at cdfreaks forums seem to say that lesser quality manufacturers still make discs for Verbatim but the discs have the MCC codes on them. I don't know if the's the case but i try to keep my ears and eyes on as many media threads as i can, to see my way thru the annoying and potentially expensive (due to coasters) media game..

Today I tested the burner in a other laptop. Guess what, same error, but at 48%. i guess that means that the burner is busted or that the firmware is obselete. Anyway, I will send it in, and have it replaced.
Thanks for the help everybody :D

Dear All
I have nearly the same problem but maybe worse
If even I succeded in writing to DVD media the data is corrupted
and guess what????????
its a codec problem Ive tried everything and when removing the codec from the system everything worked and no more corrupted data or data error in burning
pls try and inform me of the solution
its nothing about the media or the software.
UNINSTALL THE CODECS
