Illegal Disc Error on Nero 6

I'm using Nero 6.6.0.18 on Windows XP Pro SP2.
I've been brunding DVD's on this laptop for a while now and all of a sudden i'm now getting an Illegal disc error. I've been using Fujifilm Blank DVD+R's and my stock has run out and now I have four other brands, HP, TDK, Philips and Datawrite, all clearly marked as DVD+R and yet my laptop refuses to burn to them.
I also downloaded the demo version of CopyToDVD and tried that out to see if maybe it was a problem with Nero. However that software throws up the same error.
The same burner works fine as a CD burner but for some reason it now refuses to work as a DVD burner.
Any Ideas?
Cheers
Peter

let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.
You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

version 1.03 of your firmware is here, but dated April 2004!!, so the firmware is way out of date to cope with newer media.. -

Quote: Recorder: DVD+RW RW8165, Media type: DVD+R
- your blanks discs aren't being recognised, due to the firmware being so old. this is similar to what you should see -

- ie a 3line paragraph when the firmware's up to date. The firmware has been neglected by Ricoh since April 2004 (unless their own website has something newer though i very much doubt it). see here for more info as i've gone into much detail on this particular drive/firmware over last few days - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/265841

Sorry but i'm confused. I'm reading your response and also the link to the other thread that you had running and are you telling me that my firmware is out dated and that there is no upgrade available or are you trying to point me to a firmware upgrade that i need to download and install? Sorry for the basic questions but i want to be sure i understand what advice your kindly offerring to me.

In other words, creaky was saying that it has a newer version, which is 1.03, but it's going to have a tough time reading any of the latest media and their MID code (now or in the near future). Because of this: Last update: Fri Apr 30, 2004 9:56 am - it has been over a year already and there's no other new firmware add to it.

Thanks for the guidance. I'm all sorted now. with the help of my local IT support today. Managed to obtain and install the firmware upgrade to 1.03 which has resolved the issue and i can now burn DVD's again.

okay, cool; just keep in mind that you might buy discs one day and the firmware of the burner won't be able to recognise/use them due to it being out of date and neglected by the manufacturer. it happens sometimes when newer burners are manufactured, they let some drives' firmware slip by the wayside.

You need to "edit" all your Nero serials out before some hackers hacked your serial and use it for free. You shoudn't post the whole logs, that's more than one log, all you need to post is just the very last section with ====Nero Burning Rom ======, but it's alright. Here's what I see.
Quote: Nero version: 6.3.0.0
Nero is way way old, you need to update to the latest 6.6.0.18 -- nearly 90% of time times, updating will help to increase the burning performances.
Quote: Recorder: < DVD+RW RW8165> Version: 1.03
Firmware seems to be current, according to rpc forum http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1815

DiskPeripheral : TOSHIBA MK8025GAS atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : DVD+RW RW8165 atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : AXV CD/DVD-ROM 2.2a axsaki Port 2 ID 0 DMA: Off
2 of your drivers (including your Ricoh burner and a dvd-rom's DMA is OFF, it needs to be turn back On. Here's what you need to do.
((To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" its driver ?for Win XP users? by alkohol))
Here are some helpful pictures for references.
A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER," left click on "PROPERTIES"
B) left click on "HARDWARE," left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"
C) left click on + sign of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
D) double left click on either ?Primary? or ?Secondary IDE Channel?
E) left click on "DRIVER," left click on "UNINSTALL"
You will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system," just click "OK," now "SHUTDOWN" or "Restart" your computer
F) once you restarted your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner?s drive and re-install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!!
**NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "Uninstall" it from the ?DVD/CD-ROM Drives?
****at Device Manager****
(A) left click on + sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives
(B) double left click on your DVD burner or your DVD-ROM drive
(C) click on "DRIVER," "UNINSTALL," "OK" and then "Shutdown" or "Restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!!
Enjoyed it..!!

Looks like either Nero or firmware is not recognizing the media code. Try to updat Nero to the latest and do a search on the net for any current firmware available for your Ricoh burner.

It doesn't help. I've done anything you suggested - I've updated Nero to 6.6.0.18, I've tried to uninstall drivers and checked the newest firmware. Nothing helps.

let's have latest section of logfile, however it would appear that the stumbling block is the firmware, ie it's too old to recognise the blank discs that you're using. firmware is what teaches your burner about blank discs/burn speeds and if it's too old it's not equipped to do either of those things. if the firmware's been out of date for this long the only thing to suggest is to buy a new burner; there's been a few of these Ricoh threads recently, at least a couple different drive models have the same exact problem
