powershot s40 with black screen (of death?) pls help!

when I open lens cover, camera powers up as usual and I see all graphics (focus box, flash icon, etc) but screen is black. it stays black when I change modes (tho graphics change for various modes) and when I 'take pictures'. all pictures are black. otherwise camera seems to function narmally, flashes, zooms, I can see startup picture, menu...
ohmigod! I turned off the auto power down, and now it works again!

OK, it's no longer the catastrophe I thought it was, but it's still messed up, right? is there something wrong with it that I can fix, or is it just limping along to it's demise?
