Ok, first off I'm a newbie to all this. I have surfed around and found a bunch of worthless guides that are in such broken English I couldn't follow them. I found a guide at:

Which was very easy to follow and proceeded to follow it to the letter. With a few problems I managed to create a working VCD that played on my dvd console. The problems are what bother me. I used Virtual Dub to rip the audio from the divx to a wav. I used TMPGenc to convert the divx video and the wav file into two mpeg 1 files. NP. I tested the mpeg file and everything looked squashed. It was a widescreen movie and everything looked smashed and way too "wide". I fiddled around with some settings and produced a short clip that looked better. (Which the guide said nothing about.. the guide just said to select "Keep aspect ratio") Anyway NP. Whatever. I then try fixing problem number 2. The mpg file looked HORRIBLE! The original divx movie was 700ish megs and looked GREAT even fullscreen. This mpg converted from it looked god awful with these blotchy blocks all over the place. I checked for a bitrate setting, or something similar and couldn't find it in TMPGenc. All I could find were some settings that might have been it, but were greyed out for some annoying reason. Question is... How the %^&@ can I convert divx and have it 1. Keep the aspect ration even though it lied and said it would with that setting... and 2. How to I ensure that it keeps the bitrate, or framerate, or whatever it is that controls how blotchy and crappy it looks? I mean come on! The original looked excellent. I threw away those worthless discs I made. I've checked other guides, read endless posts on different sites and tried everything I could think of. Is there something I need to set in TMPGenc? Are there other Encoders that work better? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.
