VCD/ TV connection.

Hi Everyone.
Am a first time user of a VCD player and TV (you may laugh out loud). I got used systems with no manuals. I connected the VCD player to the TV using a scart cable. The cable has output and input switch, i dont know where to switch. Although i watch tv i dont know how to switch it to video.
The VCD player is a 3-unit old Denon type (can play music CDs with radio and tape)and the TV a 26" old sony with a control panel at the bottom right that can be tucked in or pulled out.
Although the VCD player runs, no picture comes out when i connect in my naivety. Please help. Am a movie lover. The problem is with switching the scart cable (input or output?) and switching the TV to video mode (how?). I will be grateful.
