Hello everyone I am thinking on buying an extra gig of ram but I have some ?s first. I have 2 512mb ram modules in dual channel right now i am gona buy a 1gb ram module is it going to make all sticks of ram run in single channel memory? If so will it be worth doing it? any info would be great thanx in advance.

You have to read your motherboard manual to see which configurations do what. Mine will run in single channel mode, if I had 3 slots filled, and nothing in the 4th slot.

I have one gig of DDR Ram, but it came as a set. That is the only way I would get RAM for a mobo that takes DDR Ram. I would not get a single stick, nor would I buy unmatched RAM, if I could help it.

right mine came as a set as well. I have two of the same ram modules in the first two slots in dual channel. I do not have a mobo manual for my pc. I know the ram i am looking at buying is a name brand but im not sure if it will work. How would i go about finding this out? if i would go ahead and purchase it would it be worth the upgrade if it is compatable?

Hi Nate,
A Gig's not too bad, lotsa people strugglin along with 512MB (or less)...
Hey 2GB is sweet, but it's gonna cost you ;^)
You will need 2 x 1GB to maintain 128-bit operation (dual-channel).
It is almost inevitable that PC3200 DDR are being used. You can check it out using CPU-Z:

I can get 512's for $50 bucks each but 1GB are $115 apiece; that's for generic CAS3 stuff supporting only quite relaxed timings.

well i can get me a gig of ram for 77 dollars so that isnt bad at all. yes i am using 3200 ddr ram. I understand that i have to have 2 1gb modules to maintain in dual channel. I just can not afford that much right now. So since i will have 2 512mb and 1gb ram it will not be in dual channel they will all be ran in single channel correct? Also the ram i am looking at getting is corsair i know corsair is good name brand ram.
