Yes that's right, my attempt to unlock my Nokia 6230 failed and i've been looking at the pill bottle ever since lol.

Cos i'm uneducated in this matter I was needing to know that if it fails after all attempts, does this mean the phone will still work but is still locked to that network?

Might just get a new sim for that network instead of taking it somewhere to have the codes inputed correctly.
