I have a HD-DVR Scientific Atlanta cable box...It gives me about 5 or 6 HD channels but obviously turning to my local stations I will not get them in HD (although a lot of shows say they are)...So what do I need to get the local stations in HD???...Can I pick up one of those antennas at walmart for about 30-40 bucks and connect it or what????

You should be getting your local channels in HD from your cable service. The HD channels arn't on the same channels. I know with time warner that they are located in the 900's in my area.

Check out this web site to see where the channels are in your area.

Yeah my service is the same way (Charter) but mine are in the 700's...It goes

Espn-HD
Discovery-HD
HBO-HD
Sho-HD
Starz-HD
Cinemax-HD

and that is it for HD channels...I think I need an antenna to get them or something, because I entered my zip into that link you gave me (45714) and it gave the regular stations number like ABC is channel 8 here and that is what it is listed as when I did an HD-only search...

i dont want to be so mean but you guys went to school or you just tip the techers on school, evrything is about science, in the world of electronics, you get hd locals chanelles if they where streaming in hd, most of the local chanells dont come on hd, local chanells except abc7 which is a global local channel, other locals are small tv stations so they dont have enogh money to improve to hd, abc7 is the only local i know its streaming in hd and for ex hbo got like 8-10 channels and they stream hd only 1, so you guys when you thinking to move to hd think twice because you will not get all the channels hd just only around 10 or not even that much. maybe in the next 10-15 years we will have everything hd and we will buy plasma tvs for $500.00

Sol-What does this have to do with anything? I know I only get about 8-HD channels total and the only one I can really pick up is NBC on an OTA receiver (the satellite is 5 miles from my house)...The fact is that shows are broadcasted in HD and the link Diabolos provided showed local stations that broadcast HD programming and even notes they are "digital" stations...All I want is my CBS in HD so I can catch me some football, but I cant even get that...

Wow, you don't have much of a selection. Where I live (45215) I can get all of my local channels digitally at SDTV and HDTV quality levels. And I can get them via OTA antenna and cable (time warner). Soon, Directv will also start carring digital local channels aswell.

Soljacker, dude it depends on your area. FYI all the big networks now broadcast using the all digital ATSC system as well as the old analog NTSC system. Also the cable companies have to carry the local digital channels as well, for free. By "free" I mean it must be offerd with the lowest level of service for no additional cost. Don't argue, its true, it was mandated by the FCC (the govenment).

@Diabolos:

Isn't there some sort of legislation in place where, in the next couple of years, all radio and television broadcasting companies will be required to broadcast digitally...something about freeing up analog broadcasting for first responders; it was brought about by communications difficulties during and immediately after the world trade center attacks. (I seem to remember reading about this but can't remember any specifics). If this comes to pass, I wonder what effect it would have on HDTV availability...if at all.

Wow, I though everone know that. The FCC has mandated that by the end of 2006 all over-the-air tv broadcasts must be digital. The hard cut-off date for date though is still "in the air." The proposed cut off date is 2009.

Check out this page for more info on the impact DTV will have on consumers (you and me):

No, I knew it was in the works but knew none of the specifics. Thanks for the link, Ced, I only looked at it quickly but will read it when I get home; sounds like a lot interesting material there. Thanks again....Gerry
