I have the exact same problems! I was under the impression that my TV would let me use 720p or 1080i but I can only select 480p and when I try to set it to the others I get a blue screen! How did you get Microsoft to send you new cables?

Well, here is the update...
The first person I spoke to send they would send me cables. Then two days later, I could get NO picture. So I called again. The lady said she would overnight me cables. Then yesterday, I called again. The guy said that they would only send me cables AFTER I sent mine in. Then to top it off, he couldn't set up a return on his system for some reason. So now, I have to wait for them to call me. Who knows when that will be . So much for customer service.

Do u honestly feel that the cables may be the problem? I have got a 42 inch rear projection TV & I will be very annoyed if the most it can support is 480p! I thought most HD sets supported at least 720p!

I can't see why it won't work. My TV won't support 720p, but will 1080i. I'm going to buy some cables in the morning and try them out.

Do you know if a Toshiba 42WH36P is able to support 720p or 1080i? What happens to your screen when you changes the settings to 1080i and also what happens when you change it to 720p? I have currently got my PAL settings at PAL-60 but when I changes it to PAL-50 with the HDTV switch turned on from my AV cable, I get a really blurry screen that is very disjointed! Do yuo have any clues what i could do?

My screen would just get static if I tried to switch to either 720p or 1080i. I don't know why you would get a fuzzy picture. I'm going to buy a cable today and I'll let you know.

@KJK!LLER:
Are you sure you have a hi-def TV? The users manual makes no mention and the following seems to indicate that it isn't (I'm not expert though:)
<http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/BOOOOW5EX6/202-6826251-1... At the bottom of the page is a link to some procuct specs. Under HD, you'll see it says "NO"
I hope it's wrong; I don't want to rain on your parade!

I am really depressed now that this must be the case! I don't understand why my TV has the correct ports for the HD cables to plug into! I am really angry as I will now have to get a new TV!

Some early TVs that say they are HD-Ready actaully arent, they are basically for the TV channels that are in HD, so the cables wont matter. The reacent HDTVs are the REAL HDTVs, they actaully makea difference in the picture and sound. You should trust Sony and Panasonic, and probably JVC.

I am never going to be allowed a new TV! What is the best brand to buy for HD? Is Samsung got good HD quality? If I am ever going to be able to buy a new TV I want a TV that is future-proff and that will have the technological capabilities to last me for a very long time! I definately want a HDTV that lets me set it to 1080i and I know that there are also TV's for 1080p so please give me some feedback as I am going to have to start over again!

Well, the good news is that hi def TVs have become much cheaper than they were. I would stay with rear projection as they are much cheaper than regular one's of the same size; rear projections also have a far better picture than they did just a year or two ago. Samsung does make very good ones; sony also makes some 42' which are excellent and not terribly expensive...but there are lots of brands that are very good and cheaper that the bigger brand names; I can't really give you the lowest prices because I don't understand English money relative to American.
Thing is, I'm not into games (I just happen to run across your post about your toshiba); there are considerations when one likes games but I don't know what they are. There are discussions on this in the "displays" forum with people who are into games. You can get some good advice there on the subject although activity seems slow over the last couple of days (the holidays, I guess)...try to get the advice of another gamer. If you post there, make sure to mention that you're looking to the best deal for the least money; there are people in that forum who have an endless supply of $$. Best of luck!
By the way, I have a sony KDF-42WE655 LCD rear projection hi def and I couldn't be happier. It was one of the more expensive of the 42" rear projection sonys (because of the LCD) but still moderately priced and cheaper than the samsungs but sony had some 42" rear projections which were considerably less expensive with a damned good picture all the same. Get the advice of a gamer in the display forums but always remember to go online and do your homework ... some people don't know whereof they speak but sound like they do. ALWAYS read the reviews before buying.

Ok, I'm feeling like a heal. I looked at the back of my set. It is a first generation HDTV and only has 1 1080i input. The others are all 480p. Guess I owe MS an apology.

HDTV's are very expensive. I can justify buying an X360, but can't really see the need to fork out hundreds for a HDTV at the moment. Surely it can't make the games look that much better?

Can anyone give me an opinion on HOW much better it makes the games? I dont have an HDTV, so haven't seen the games in action on one. I like to get the most out of gaming, but forking out that much money is a big commitment.

If I set my 360 up using HD on my Sony Bravia LCD TV on any setting from 480-1028 which it supports I get slight time delay when moving on screen. I was playing call of duty and if you move left or right quickly if theres something in front it leaves a slight ghosting effect only for a split second. If I connect through normal scart socket I have no problem but the graphics are rubbish.
Are Microsoft bringing out a proper HDMI lead? and is this problem normal????? Yes I am using a HD TV and a new 360, tried every setting I can think of but using hd leaves this slight ghosting on dark objects, anyone help me?????????????????????????????????????//////
