No audio in wmp with ac3 avis after nero install

After installing nero I no longer have sound when playing .avi movies in windows media player that use ac3 audio. It seems that nero installed its own audio codec Nero Digital Audio Decoder. AVIs with .mp3 sound work fine and so do dvds. Any help is much appreciated.
