xp wont find external hd

I have taken a 160 gb western digital SATA hard drive out of a dell optiplex gx620 and installed it into an external case, that uses a usb connection, so that I can mainly save movies to it. But when the hd is plugged into any computer (I've tried 4 different machines) running windows xp nothing happens. It wont recognize the drive, it wont even say that there is a usb plugged in. However when I plugged the hd into a system running Windows 2000 Pro it found the device and allowed me to use it. I have since upgraded the computer with 2000 to xp and it now wont recognize the hd. So I am pretty sure it is a software problem with xp. Does anyone know how I can get the hd to work with xp?
