Hi -
Halleleujah! A good Nero forum!
I've been using Nero 5.5 (a "lite" version that came with my computer about 3 years ago) to burn .wav files to CD-Rs. I have burned probably thousands of them and never had any trouble with them being readable as audio CDs.
Suddenly, over the weekend, this changed. When I tried to burn some .wav files to a CD-R, the resulting product was not recognized by any of my usual players. All of my home CD players acted like there was no CD inserted, as did Audio Station (the media player that came with my Turtle Beach sound card).
Windows Explorer does show it as an audio CD, listing the .cda files, and on the first try, I double-clicked on one of them and Windows Media Player did play it. But on subsequent tries, even this didn't work. WMP just hung.
Burning these CDs has always been pretty idiot-proof; I use the Nero wizard (same as I always have) and I don't believe I have changed a thing.
It's acting like the CD is not being "finalized". I went hunting through the Nero settings, and found a "finalize" check-box on the CDA tab under Audio CD. But when "method" is set to "Disc-At-Once" (as Nero recommends and it has always been), the "finalize" check box is grayed out.
I did change method to Track-At-Once, which allowed me to get at and explicitly check the "finalize" box, and then it worked. But all the documentation I can find says to use DAO.
Also, when I choose "Track-At-Once", I get a warning that using the TAO method, CD-Text cannot be written (so I have to un-check the "write CD-Text" box). I *know* I have written CD-Text before.
Besides being able to burn CDs with Nero by switching to Track-At-Once, I have successfully burned recognizable audio CDs with Windows Media Player, so I would think that confirms there isn't anything wrong with the burners (actually, I have two of them), or the CDs I am using.
I can't imagine what would have mysteriously changed. I'm pretty technical (a professional programmer), and I have searched all over the web, especially Nero's site, but I guess I don't understand enough about the detail of audio CD burning to resolve this. Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks so much,
Ted

Hi Ted
just had a look at your thread and it sounds very similar!
I'm not a nero expert and have never heard of some of those options you mentioned (I have never had the need to change anything before, like you said it has always been idiot proof!)
I will have a look when I get a minute and let you know how I get on.
By the way, do you think this might have something to do with it?
"This version of the application can not run in this language"
It appears every time I start Nero, it never used to but has done since putting my 'real' version of SP2 XP on (before that I was being a bit naughty) Though this message has appeared for a while now and never caused any problems before. You just click 'ok' and Nero lets you get on as normal.

I left out one other piece of information: When I do a CD copy from another CD with Nero, the resulting CD works fine, everywhere. The problem is only when I burn from .wav files. doo doo doo doo
In response to someone's suggestion in another forum, I un-installed and re-installed Nero last night, and burned another CD. It played fine on my home players, but Audio Station still isn't recognizing it. So now I'm more confused than ever.

Hmm, this is interesting.
I'm a professional programmer in a production environment. My philosophy, learned by necessity on the job, has always been "if it works, leave it alone", and "old, dull dreary and dependable is better than new, tricky, clever and dicey". To put it another way, those who ride the early crests of new tchnology waves sometimes get soaked.
But I've been randomly browsing other threads in this forum, and it sounds like lots of people are saying that even if I haven't changed anything about what has always worked in the past (my Nero, my burner, its firmware or its driver), other stuff (like maybe the blank CDs I am buying) could be different as technology changes. And this could cause what "has always worked" to quit working.
Is this possible?

changing blank cd's could defo affect things, some are good and some are realy crap.
Can't be my problem though as I haven't changed mine. I'm still on the same 100 disc spindle I have been using with no problems for months.

If you reinstall Nero did you reamember to clean out the registry? I know from the past that Nero dont clean out the reg and maybe that could be the problem? Also did you install some other media software, direct X ore others, that could affect Nero?
I would try to uninstall and then do a reg clean, you can find several tools out there, I use some thing called Advanced system Optimizer, it works great for me! And the reinstall Nero!
Good luck

@piano1948, latest version of Nero is 7, however most use 6.6.0.18 which is the latest version of Nero6.
[qoute]I'm a professional programmer in a production environment this being the case you should be aware of the changes to Nero.

one example of the "it's not broke so don't fix it" is firmware. if the burner's firmware gets too out of date, and you go buying newer discs, in time those new discs can end up being too new for the firmware to know what to do with. We all have an element of leaving stuff alone cus it just works, however in computers it just doesn't work that way for long.

Better than that, I used an operating system partition image backup to recover to a clean install of Windows.
Good thought, though. The "un-install" functions of most application programs just don't clean up after themselves very well.

Sometimes that is the best thing to do. It's the only way you know for sure that things are clean.
As noted above, I seem to have have found a workaround (TAO instead of DAO). But I'll get this strange behavior figured out eventually.
Thanks

Quote: This being the case you should be aware of the changes to Nero.
I am aware there are newer versions available. I am choosing not to use them yet.
My experience in the real world has taught me that "new" is not necessarily better. In fact, in this business, the opposite is often true. So I am very cautious about installing new software. And I keep operating system partition backups so I can easily turn the clock back if necessary.
As a result my PC has always been extremely stable and dependable. That is way more important to me than having the latest and greatest bells and whistles.
As noted above, I have a workaround (TAO instead of DAO). But I'll figure out the strange behavior eventually.
Thanks

Did you try putting the dot on the radio button for no multisession, then go back to your burn tab and then you should be able to place a check in the box for finalize cd good luck and Happy New Year lol.
