Hello folks,
I think I already know the answer, but would you mind taking a look at this logfile and let me know what you think?
I have a Memorex DVD burner (internal burner, in a Bytecc enclosure, connected to an USB port).
Burned succesfully Fujifilm and Sony DVDs (Sony's play much better on my old DVD player) but I'm now stuck with a bunch of Memorex DVD-R. My bad: I thought I would have had less problems with media of the same brand as the burner: did not think of checking the quality first ...

Eck! The Pits! Reason you have an illegal disc error.
Throw those things out and stick with the Fuji or Sony (made in Japan only)
Nothing else amiss though you may want to cut down the target size to 4360 from 4465.

I tried with 3800MB and then I returned the DVDs to the store.
I found online at the same price the Taiyo Yuden that are so hyped in this forum:

FYI: I had downloaded also the latest verison of DVDfab Platinum: I thought I'd try a different burning engine: I got some error even in that case. How can they keep selling this crap?

I also tried Memorex for that reason than I became wiser:)
Maybe that's why the error is named 'illegal disc' :)

you are burning too close to the edge of the disc. Set your target to 4300 in Nero or DVD Shrink, whichever you use. This target size will keep you from burning too close to the edge, where the dye coverage is spotty on crap media like CMC mags. It wouldn't even burn those at 1x.. Try better media, and you will probably have better luck. Your firmware is up to date.

MaxBurn, a question for you: I understand your recommendation of burning no more than 4300MB and I agree: that's a good idea, but I'm not clear how this would help in this case: the burning does not even start.

I have had a simliar problem (another post) and I was also told (after a couple of nice suggestions from members) that it was the media but because I just Bought a 75 disc spool of MEMOREX DVD+R's and 5 or 6 out of every 7 were giving me problems (Not Finilizing) I had to keep searching for another solution so, not, to waist my discs.
I tried, (Even Thou I have already used DVD Shrink to burn them to my comp.) DVD Shrink again to burn them to dvd (Instead of going straight to nero) and it works perfect.
I have no problem what so ever with MEMOREX DVD+R's
Anyway to those that want to try it, just use dvdshrink (even if you already used it to put the movie to your hard drive)
Open dvdshrink and open the files (from your hard drive) and let it burn.
Don't Go straight to Nero Use the bypass DVDSHRINK and sit back for 15
minutes.
Nothing wrong with MEMOREX DVD's (My Opinion Anyway)

You are right, changing the target wouldn't help in this case. I just saw the target set to 4465, and thought i would tell you about that. Crappy media can cause skipping/freezing at the end of the movie (in your case you didn't get that far) particullary if you are burning to the edge of the disc.
It was just another thing in the posted log that should be changed in the future.

In your case the problem seemed to be discs not finalizing. Memorex DVDs have many more problems, some of which you may not be aware of. The CMC made memorex have crappy dye. This can cause a number of problems, and one of the worst ones is best described as dye rot. The disc may get finished with the burn process with no errors. Playback fine once or twice. Later (anywhere from a day to a year later) that very same movie burnt on a CMC will not play, or exibit playback problems, tiling, skipping, freezing. The dye rotted away and destroyed the data in the process. I have seen this happen with my own eyes, so i know it isn't just a rumor. Check the manufacturer of those memorex discs, and if they come up as CMC mag, i would suggest you not put anything important on those discs. I went thru and backed up as many of my CMC memorex discs to good Taiyo Yuden discs. I didn't want to take a chance. Some of the CMCs were impossible to back up as they were getting too many CRC read errors, and the movie had played fine before. The dye used in media is like a foundation to your house(movie). CMC uses quicksand for their foundation.
Also DVD Shrink uses Nero for the burn, unless you specify DVD Decrypter as the burner. Just an FYI. Shrink has no burn engine in it.

In an old thread this guy claimed he got a movie to burn by placing the disc in the freezer before burning, and called it the cold burn method. Had me rolling on the floor with laughter.
As far as using Memorex media, if you like it, and it doesn't give you any problems, go for it. Just be aware it is considered crap media by many ppl, not just me, and it could give you problems. I don't get any reward for suggesting good media, just trying to save you some headaches later. If ya got plenty of asprin, enjoy those memorex :).

I should have mention that am trying to look for a post (On here, linking to another forum) that has a very good suggestion/point/advice etc.) about labels, and why you should never put them on your movie dvd's.
Which maybe can explain alot of playback problems

Sure it is, (Because they are being told so) Untill people start having problems with sony, maxell, and no more drivers to update, they are going to keep following others, instead of tryng to figure out a sullution for them selfs.
Anyway, My point is, Don't blame it on the DVD.(media)
I Have bought no name dvd's from my dollar store her in toronto (for $.20 and had no problems with them after I figured out the dvdshrink thing,
But like always said each to thier own,
You will always have pigeons following you when they think the'rs somthing to follow.
I meant that in a good way (theres no smilies here)

As far as Memorex media, you can ask creaky, kivory666, alkohol, GlueEater, and many others, if it is a problem. They have seen hundreds, if not thousands of logs where it came down to Memorex media being the main problem. Once the media was changed, burning took place once again. Many other regular members here have found cheap media to be a problem for them, and others, so it is not just a fad, or someone following advice just to be popular. Too many ppl have had problems with Memorex media for it to be just a rumor. It is a fact, and can be proven just by looking at Nero burn logs that failed due to crappy media. I am glad you found a way to use those discs, just keep in mind you are not going to get very many bad media followers here. Very good media can be had for the same price as "cheap" media with just a little research. Crappy media does cause problems for many many ppl. Its not an urban legend, its a fact. We give this advice to help ppl burn, not to gain a following, or cult status. We get no kick back for advizing ppl to use good media. Again, whatever makes you happy. Doesn't bother me that you use Memorex, and love it. If you start helping ppl with their Nero burn logs, you will see what kind of head aches memorex media causes. Try telling someone who is making lots of coasters out of those memorex discs that it isn't the media, but something wrong with their process.
