I have the Pioneer A09 (same as 109) and this is an excellent burner. It only booktypes DVD+R DL discs and not normal DVD+R. Also it works very well with Nero and both DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn (the only apps I use to burn are those three).
I will tell you right now that this drive loves Taiyo Yuden DVD+R (get these if you can find them!!!) and I have had very Good results with Ritek R03 DVD+R (TY is still much better though).
I have no experience with the BenQ though.

Thanks Jag, I appreciate the quick reply!! I cant find the BenQ 1640 anywhere except Ebay, and they want 19.99 for shipping...imagine that! So I was looking at the Pioneer 110 as a substitude..

i also have been very pleased with my Pioneer dvr-109, but i use hacked firmware, so i DO booktype ALL my dvd+r/dvd+r DL media to dvd-rom~ :)
i also own the coveted Benq dw-1640 that is NO LONGER BEING MADE...it's a great drive, but i noticed on ebay, that $19.99 for shipping is ridiculous... they have buy it now for $39.99 plus $20 to ship...end up being like $60 for the BARE DRIVE...no thanks, that ebay seller can shove it... :)
honestly, to me, the Benq1640 is WORTH $60, but i PERSONALLY am not willing to give some ebay smuck $60 for it, that's just ME and nobody else...
the newest Pioneer 110 automatically booktypes DVD+R DL to dvd-rom, that is a given straight out of the box...but, since i do not own one, it's only info. i'm passing on as to WHAT it does...i use my dvr-109 daily (well, when my desktop was working...fried it recently, so waiting for new mobo/psu unit) :)
if i had a choice, since i use both Benq and Pioneer burners, i would give my vote to Benq (only because of Qsuite and the company backing booktyping from their website...no need for modified firmware to achieve this as with Pioneer) :)
but in terms of quality burns...both are very good drives, i've had my dvr-109 since it first came out...paid a pretty penny for it (close to $100 at the time), still fastest burner i currently own...
good luck w/ ur decision, they are both quality drives that i use; i have an older NEC 3520a and Liteon 1633S on my 2nd comp...decent drives again...i just prefer my Pioneer/Sony (actually it's a Liteon rebadged) and Benq drives the most at this point in time...
i'm waiting for the Benq dw-1650 to come out in U.S....i'm willing to be the guinea pig in that case... :)

that is a highly anticipated Benq drive you got there, please do let us know how it works out for you when you receive it...
i'm not into the whole "lightscribe" thing, that's just personal preference once again, but, i'm waiting for the Benq dw-1650 when it comes out...i'll definitely be one of the 1st to purchase that drive...

Anybody know where to find a firmware to allow Bitsetting/Booktyping on a Pioneer DVR-108? It came standard on my Sony Vaio computer bought about a year ago. Works good, just can't Booktype.
