M-JPEG - DivX/XviD color shift problems

Whenever I try to convert PICVideo M-JPEG .avi files to either XviD or DivX, the colors are shifting. Blacks become grey, blues and reds are over saturated. I've tried it with VDub and DivX converter and get the same result. If I use Nero Recode and convert to Nero Digital (mp4), there is no colour shifting.

The source was captured from PAL video.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Sounds like a decoder problem. Nero might be using its own decoder.
