When trying to rip a copy or a DVDR I'm basically swamped with all type of error using decrypter. Forget Nero it freezes too. DVD Shrink is a ripper is useless. Now if it's an original DVD that's been pressed no problems.
Ok...I know what you guys are going to say media..it's the media.
Nope...I have an NEC 16x with Liteon DVD-Rom at my home pc...they both crap out...but when using my sister inferior Teac 85E I believe...not a problemo.
It is possible it's my operating system?

I have 3.0 ghz Pentium 4 w/ 512mb memory. My Drives are NEC ND3540 for burning and LiteOnSOHC-5232K as a slave. Remarkably the liteon rips better but slower.
My sister on the other hand has a Pentium 2.6 less memory with a Teac DVD DV-W58E. Rips beautifully...not one error.

I know, I know, but I have to ask. What kind of media are you using?
Do you know the firmware version of your NEC? It should be 1.03, although you can get buffalo firmware that will allow bitsetting on this drive at http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86
Do some reading at this forum and you can make your drive perform better.

mmruger, doesn't matter what media I used...Verabtim to crap.
...it's only getting worse. On both drives..which brings me to believe it might be a PC issue rather than drive or media issue.

Maybe time to take it to a PC doctor then. While there I recommend a RAM innoculation to 1gb at least.

Correct if I am wrong, but you have a ripping problem not a burning issue, right, if so, the media is not an issue?
Again, I ask, do you have DMA turned on your DVD drives?

After turning DMA on, re-boot your machine immediately, and then see if it is still on after the re-boot.

if u have windows xp, under device manager select ide/ata, then select primary. after this delete the driver and reboot this should fix it automatically.

@gamename,
I don't mean to butt in. However, MOST Optical Drives are on the Secondary IDE channel & this is the one to remove the driver for. Then re-boot to correct DMA issues with optical drives. I think that removing the Primary IDE channel driver won't affect the secondary channel. I KNOW for fact though that if your DVD drive that's affected is on the Secondary IDE channel, remove the driver, re-boot DMA returns. Windows XP automatically takes the drive to PIO Mode after enough read errors. This procedure above resets the DMA mode.

I've got two Primary IDE channels...that can't be right.
One is set to DMA the other PIO only...any suggestions? Thanks

Set the one that is PIO to DMA, and all should be good. Then re-boot.

Try replacing the ide cable to ya roms and then reset the dma. A faulty cable will cause enough errors to shift it into pio mode:>
