Hi, I just got a psp so I am very much a newbie. My psp says I have version 2.0 and I saw there is a 2.6 version. This is how I attempted to do the download.
1. Connected my psp to my pc with the usb cable.
2. My I gig memory chips is inside the psp.
3. I made folders called PSP, Games, and Update
4. I downloaded 2.6 into the Update folder.
5. I then went to games and then update and got the message saying I don't need to update.

Why don't I need to update if my PSP has 2.0 and 2.6 is out?
Could it be because I did not have my PSP plugged into the ac adapter (like it says in the instructions, that I didn't read)? I also had a game inside, would that do anything to make the update not work?

Thanks for the help, yes I should read instructions, but I don't have the patience.

Well, before you do actually update, are you sure you want to? you probably wont notice "any" differences if you upgrade to 2.6 apart from the fact that you loose all chances of being able to play homebrew games, mess around with ur psp and play "backups".

So are you sure you want to?

if you had a umd game in - it may be that you clicked on the umd update. which may be a v2.0 update

therefore there is no need for your psp to update from 2 to 2 - if you get my meaning

also, like my good friend above said. are you sure you want to update.

version 2.6 is basicly security fixes and the rss feeding thing- which i know nothing about -- so can't comment.

way up your pros and cons then decide.

your rather lucky to get a v2, i got a 2.01 :(

Thanks for answering. So, I may not want to do the update. What files music/video files can 2.0 play? My husband tried to download some music and video files into the psp, but none of them show up. I am not sure what types of files he was trying to play.

The PSP? can play:

v1.5 Mp4*
v2.0 Mp4 and H.264AVC - The latter allowing for smaller File size - better playback then normal Mp4...

* With v1.5 there most likely are some Homebrew Media Players that can playback DivX and or other WMP type Files on the PSP?. However S0NY? never really intended the PSP? to play such Files by default....

Jess2100, whatever you do DONT update your firmware! Consider yourself very lucky to get 2.0. If you have anything higher than 2.0, you can't unlock the many cool features of the homebrew scene! You need 1.5 firmware or earlier to do this but there is an exploit in the 2.0 so you can downgrade the firmware to 1.5. There is no downgrader for anything higher than 2.0 so slow down trigger, and stop messing with the upgrade! lol.
