Since you have a limited amount of ram on that system, this list should free up alot of resources. NOTE: This list includes the disabling of the theme's service, so you're only choice for themes would be the Classic theme. You don't have to disable it, but themes do take up memory...as does everything on the desktop, or running in the background.
Go to Start, Run, type in services.msc
Click on the Standard tab near the bottom of the window. To disable the services, double click on the icon, and on the first tab, you'll see a pull down menu with three choices. Automatic, Manual, and Disable.
Disable the following:
Alerter
Clipbook
Error Reporting Service
Event Log
Fast User Switching
Help and Support
IMAPI CD Burning
Indexing Service
Messenger
Net Logon
Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
Network DDE
Network DDE DSDM
Performance Logs and Alerts
Portable Media Serial Number Service
QoS RSVP
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
Remote Access Connection Manager
Remote Desktop Help Session Maganer
Remote Registry
Routing and Remote Access
Secondary Logon
Smart Card*
SSDP Discovery Service**
System Event Notification
System Restore Service***
Task Scheduler
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Telnet
Themes****
Uninterruptible Power Supply
Windows Time
Wireless Zero Configuration*****
*unless you plan on using a Smart Card reader
** leave if you plan on using Universal Plug and Play devices
*** System Restore hogs way to much disk space in my opinion, disable to reserve those resources
**** disabling the Themes will leave you with the Windows Classic theme only. This will also disable things such as shadows under the mouse, pictures for folders...etc. (basically uses the Windows 98 classic look) and can free up to 5-10mb of system ram.
***** disable unless you're using wireless 802.11 technology
If the computer is a stand alone, and will not be connected to a network, there are other services you can disable as well.
