vt57, like Alkohol said and he posted a thread on media to use you may want to consider bying Yuden or Maxell(Japan) media. You can't go wrong with those.
Tests have shown that Yuden comes in at 95% success rate and Maxell(Japan) comes in at the same rate. So in response to your question success rate of Philips DVD-R is only at 50-80% I would assume you would know best and buy better media.
Since you have been informed now of proper media to use go buy them and you will have better results than what you have right now.

First of all, thank you to all those who replied. I'll get the Maxell media made in Japan when I ran out of Sony medias.

I bought 50 Philips DVD-R and none has worked so far in my ps2, I used a sony dvd-r(which I regularly use) and the same game played fine.

i have used the Philips 8X DVD-R for 2 years now for all
my movies, PS2 & Xbox games and have never run into a problem.
They work every time for me, but media is a funny thing.
I always go with the theory above. stick with what works for YOU.
I had great luck with TDK too and i know people who just swear that
they never worked for them. Guess my burner just does a good job with about any media, well except Memorex which i could not get a good burn from. A freind gave me a few and i tried both movies and games on them with very little if any success. Glad those Memosux were free :)
I went to circuit City this weekend and they had the Philips on sale for $5.99 a 25 pack.

Do any of you guys hear your ps2 backup discs running in your ps2 weird?
I can actually hear my backup spinning really loud. Usually, an original game disc runs really quiet and you can't hear any sound that the ps2 produced right? Is this normal or my ps2 has a problem?
Hey steimy, do you any sounds that your ps2 produced when you're playing one of your Philips disc backups?

Has anyone had any luck with Maxell DVD-R 16x disc?
When I try to write it to one. A DVD decrypter error pops up and it and says cannot write medium - Incompatible format.
should I take then back or not?

What do your Philips code out at? Videohelp.com says they are either CMC Mag or Fujifilm03
MIJ or Tawain?
