When you DL Nero 7 and go to install it, i selected the custom setup and made sure Nero burning rom was selected and installed. Each option had a tab with a pulldown that said don't install, install, and install with subfolders or something like that. Maybe your express install didn't put the burning rom in there?

To add to what maxburn said. I dont know what build of 7 you are instaling. Some older builds and maybe even the latest had a problem with rom not starting because of the script (force reboot) the msi was or is runing after install.
So when you install and when it gets to the point saying you need to reboot the system. Cancel it from rebooting at that point. You can restart the computer yourself in a bit after it is finished.

the version i have is the retail version. i have also tried to custom install as well with no luck.
the reboot idea from whompus sounds interesting and i'll give it a go.
thanks so much again and happy new year!

I also recall reading about bugs in the early releases. Especially one where once you have run Nero Express you can no longer access Nero Burning ROM. Sound familiar? I'm assuming that has been fixed but there seems to be enough bugs still to stop me upgrading from v6.6 yet. When version 6 was in it's early builds I encountered a bug which I reported to Ahead. They denied there was a problem but the next build's changelog mentioned fixing the bug I complained about. I like Nero and use it a lot but I think the paying customers are the real beta testers. Good luck.

there's gotta be someone out there that can crack this one?
thanks to all who replied.

I have heard that if you have Nero express on the machine ie the serial number, it will not give you Nero burning rom. At least it was that way with my OEM vers 6. Every upgrade left me with Nero express only. I upgraded to Nero 7 Ultra, and did as i said in above post, and it is here now. Also i can select which program to use as shown below, i selected Burning ROM,
and these are the options when i selected to burn an audio cd. You have to look off to the left at this box and change settings, before you click on the "Make Audio CD" tab.
Here is what i have found. I had Nero 6 before, and only had Nero express serial number, and had no burning rom. Upgraded to Nero 7 Ultra 7.0.1.4b and now i have burning rom. BTW the Nero homepage shows Nero 7 for $79.99 download. I paid 69.something as i was upgrading from version 6 and they gave me a small discount. I have used Nero express, and burning rom in version 7. (i read in some other thread that once you selected Nero express, burning rom would disappear, but that didn't happen to me) I have seen lots of post of bugs with Nero 7, but the version i have seems to be stable so far.

I have an OEM verion 6.... that came with a new DVD burner I recently purchased... I was looking at upgrading to version 7 online last night and I was asked for a current verion serial number. Where would I find this. It is not printed on the disk. I'm at work now and do not have access... can't remember if I looked in "about" or not???

Here is what Nero says about OEM versions:
Quote: have an OEM version of Nero that does not contain all features of Nero 6. What do I do?
As you purchased Nero with a recorder, you have an OEM version that can only be used with that single recorder. OEM versions are limited versions, which do not contain all features. The manufacturer of the recorder decides about the features which will be implemented in the Nero OEM version. That means your version of Nero does not include all features of the full (=retail) version.
If you would like to upgrade to a full version, you need to order an upgrade serial number or upgrade CD. This serial number turns your OEM version into the latest Nero 6 retail release. It also enables you to use up to 4 recorders at the same time. Please visit our online shop for information and pricing.
Important note
You have to key in your old Nero serial number.
If you don't have it anymore, please contact us again and tell us how you purchased your previous version of Nero.

and on a failed install
Quote: I'm trying to install a new version of Nero but it fails. What should I do?
Please follow the steps below:
1. Download to your Desktop the General CleanTool and unzip the file with WinZIP or WinRAR.
Important notes
It´s only possible for you to start the General CleanTool if you have administration rights on your PC. If you are no administrator, an error message occurs.
Make sure you have your Nero 7 serial number to install Nero/Nero Express with. It should look like 1C80-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxx.
The serial key should be located at the inside of the Nero jewel case the Nero CD came in.
Alternatively, you can extract your serial number from your registry: Click on your start menu and select ´Run´. Type in ´REGEDIT´ and click okay. Expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder, the Software folder, the Ahead folder and the Nero Burning ROM folder. Then open the Info folder. You should see your serial number in the right window next to the name ´Serial7´.
Also all plug-ins will be removed with this tool. So please make sure you have saved any plug-in you purchased separately that you can reinstall them afterwards.
2. Double-click on the EXE file to run the CleanTool. Select 'Clean All' and click on the 'Clean' button to uninstall all Nero products.
3. Reboot your system. It will clean the registry and remove all Nero entries.
4. Download the latest Nero release from our website. After you reinstalled it on your PC, use your serial key to deactivate the demo mode.
To download the final Nero 5.5 release, please klick here:
Nero Burning ROM
To download the latest Nero 6 Reloaded release, please klick here:
Updates Nero 6 Reloaded
Important notes
InCD 5 can be removed completely under Win9xx after a reboot. The General CleanTool recognizes a running program and will request a shut down so it can remove files associated with a program after a reboot.
Updates to the latest versions of 7 are free of charge.
The Nero 6 serial number does not work for Nero 7 Premium.
To upgrade to Nero 7 Premium from a previous version, please purchase a Nero 7 Premium serial number in our online shop.

Thanks for the info. I found the # and got the upgrade ($55.99)
Do you or does anyone know if Nero or any other software allows you to pull a snapshot image from a video on DVD disk?

Your software player app will let you capture snapshot. Powerdvd is what I use. Windvd will also capture snapshot, other player apps should as well.

maxburn,
Can u pls tell me how you got the update 7.01.xxx to install?
I finally got it to download(no small task). I hit the setup, and files go into a temp folder....the executable i found and hit, says Installing Demo....I terminated it.
Do I need to "uninstall" 7.0(which I purchased) before running the update??
Am at my wits end...
fyi, I'm also having no luck getting ROM BURN to run at all which is why I'm trying to do this update

samkatz88,
Don't worry about that Demo title. It is the real, whole, and complete Nero 7 in there. Once you enter in your paid for serial number, it un-locks all the features not available in the Demo version. Be sure to write down that number, as you will need it.
If you already did a partial install, you can use the nero clean tool to do a wipe of the system, then re-download or execute the Nero 7 package. Remember to write down your serial number, or have a print out of the e-mail where they sent you the numbers and enter them in once Nero is installed. Quote: the executable i found and hit, says Installing Demo....I terminated it.
This time don't terminate it.
Here is the nero clean tool:
http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/General_CleanTool.html Give that a try. Also do the custom setup when it installs, and check to make sure it is installing everything. Each option has a tab, and make sure it says "install" if you want that feature.
Give that a try. Hopefully it will work for you. I have read many a horror story on failed Nero 7 installs. I guess i got luckey with my install.
BTW, Nero 7 is still working fine for me, no bugs for me seen in this version so far.. I haven't used everything in it, but have used Burning ROM quite a bit for DVDs and CDs. Recode 2 also worked well when i tried it.

Great samkatz! Glad we got it going for you. I like Nero. It can be picky, and tempermental, but it does many things very well. And you can usually fix it if things go bad. Those burn logs come in real handy when you have problems.
