I read up and got some MCC, got some Yuden on the way too, can't seem to find them in stores locally.

My Problem is: Window XP does not recognize ANY blank media (except dvd+rw) without a REBOOT WITH THE DISC ALREADY IN THE TRAY. I have found that burning is much more reliable when the blank dvd's are recognized by Windows (i.e, cd 0 bytes vs. dvd 4.37 bytes) It is an annoying problem.
Could this have something to do different api layers being used by other programs (like Shrink)which access the drive?

WinXP itself won't recognize any blank DVD media as DVD media because it has no concept of what DVD media is. It only has built-in support for CD media, which is why third party software is needed. If you insert DVD media, it defaults to CD.

TY branded media is only available online. However, FUJI and Sony media labeled as Made in Japan will be Taiyo Yuden nearly all the time.

When you say that WinXP doesn't recognize it, do you mean nothing happens when you insert the blank media without any third party programs running or do you mean when you have a burning program running, the program doesn't recognize the media?
