Hi
I've got the LG GDR8163B DVD-ROM drive
Recently a problem has developed. The drive can no longer read DVD discs well. DVD playback stutters constantly, and Data-discs are very slow, that is that copying a file from a data disc to the HD takes a very very long time.
However CD playback still seems to work fine.
I ran a drive test using Nero CD-DVD Speed and the results were as follows:

[20:02:07] Random Seek: 79 ms
[20:02:15] 1/3 Seek: 82 ms

[20:02:27] Starting CPU Usage Test
[20:02:42] CPU usage at 1X: 56 %
[20:02:59] CPU usage at 2X: n/a
[20:03:33] CPU usage at 4X: n/a
[20:04:42] 2:15 CPU usage at 8X: n/a
[20:04:42] Starting Burst Rate Test
[20:04:44] 0:02 Interface burst rate: 2 MB/sec (2544 KB/sec)
[20:04:44] Starting Spin-Up/Down Test
[20:04:47] Spin-up time: 2.68 seconds
[20:04:57] 0:13 Spin-down time: 0.00 seconds
[20:04:57] Starting Load/Eject Test
[20:05:02] Eject time: 5.32 seconds
[20:05:03] Load time: 1.58 seconds
[20:05:13] 0:17 Recognition time: 10.03 seconds
As you can see it uses a ridiculous amount of the processor, and when it is in use music playback (from files on the HD) stutter as a result.
Someone has suggested that the lens may just simply be dirty and I could buy one of those DVD drive cleaner discs, but before I spend the money on that I'd like to see if anyone on here believes this could help.

I actually came accross that page
I'm not to sure about how it works and the whole "REMEMBER: This is at your own risk!!!!" puts me off
How do I know which of the choices to download? I have no idea what my drive's OEM is

right click my computer, click properties, click hardware tab, click device manager, double click dvd/cdrom drives, right click lg drive, click properties, click on details tab, firmware should be right after the name of the drive

oh right aye, got it
It says I've got 0L23 which is the newest one on that site so I guess I'm up to date. Crap, I thought we were on to something there
Thanks for the help anyway.
I've got 2 drives and what I was using this one for was basically just to keep my Battlefield 2 disc in there. It was working fine a few months ago, and I was just keeping the same disc in there all the time and using my other drive for other discs. It was only recently that I used the drive for something else that I noticed it wasn't working right.
I don't know if that could have any consequence. Again, could it be as simple as a dirty lens which just needs cleaned?

I had the exact same problem and I found this thread searching for an answer. DOH!
However, I didn't want to give up. I found out the following was my problem, try it and see if it works for you:
The video performance of your DVD player might improve if you turn on direct memory access (DMA).
To turn on DMA
Open Device Manager.
Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
Right-click Primary IDE Channel, and then click Properties.
On the Advanced Settings tab, under Device 0, in Transfer Mode, click DMA if available.
Under Device 1, in Transfer Mode, click DMA if available.
Click OK.
Repeat steps 2 through 6, replacing Primary IDE Channel with Secondary IDE Channel in step 3.

I found that exact guide when i was searching too - it's not that unfortunately, although I think it may have actually helped a bit, but not fully
