Okay well I just got my PS2 Flip Top for my v4-7 PS2. I installed it and everything and finally came the moment of truth. I opened the lid and put in the Swap Magic v3.6 DVD disc. And turned on my PS2. There was this really loud noise of the disc spinning and it finally came to the screen with the Memory CArd.
It said "Reading Disc" for a while but then it just stopped at "DISC READ ERROR"!
NOOOOO! I am seriously afraid that I messed something up. I tried searching the forums but no avail.
None of my originals PS2 games are working either!
Help is appreciated. Thanks!

Gotcha, I looked there. But somehow the problem solved itself. I messed around with that white round magnetic chip thing and tried the SWAP MAGIC DVD again and it worked.
And I used my Memorex 16x DVD+R to back up DragonBall Z Budoukai 2 and it worked perfectly. I burned at 6x with DVD Decrypter. Guess I got lucky huh?
Thanks anyway! I was seriously scared there for a moment.

Yeah, I was scared for you too, heh. Disc Read Errors are never good, I was hoping that you hadn't damaged your laser while installing your fliptop. I've installed a fliptop once, a few years ago.. and I remember having trouble with that stupid white disc thing too.
Congratulations, and have fun backing up your games.

Okay well now I put everything back into his original spot and took out the Flip Top. So now there is no mod in my ps2.
I turned it on and put in a old demo disc, it came to the screen with the memory card and it said READING DISC at the bottom. Then the DISC Icon appereared!
I was like, "YES! IT WORKED!" Sadly, that was not it. Whenever i would press X to load up the disc, the screen would go black and finally come back to the screen with the Memory card. The disc never loads up.
I've tried movie dvd's, music, and all the games I have (originals and backups). No luck.
I think I may have destroyed my laser or something to that extent.
Again, thanks for all your help.

I 'm having the exact same problem, and as you, I couldn't solve it... I was thinking about exchanging the laser, but here I have a question:
Can I replace only the lens part? The piece that have the lens, that and that board with the diodes to this laser calibration thing? Or do I have to replace the whole thing... I've saw on some websites that there are being sold the piece that I described and a part that looks like the piece and the carriage...
If anyone could redirect me to any site where I can identify the thing I need to replace, please, do so...
if it helps, my PS2 is an old model scph15000

Damn, I guess I'm not alone. Yeah I saw that part on some websites too. But I don't want to go ahead and waste my money on it directly without knowing what the problem is just yet.
Thats why i posted it here.
Hit me up on AIM sometime: nik3t

Is your console still playing CDs games? Mine is, but only Cds... Every DVD that I put it gets the disc read error message... Be it movie, original or backup...
I've tried everything that I found on rapair guides... Clean the lens, calibrate the laser turning that diode thing (the only thing I got from this is that at least CD games loads faster now), the white disc behind the laser that raises/lower the laser arm, putting the console on vertical etc... Nothing worked for me...
If no one have any other idea, I will have to wait till monday and ask for a tech to take a look at it...

If it won't even boot original's there isn't much you can do. You need to take it to a pro and see what he says. It's possible you damaged the laser. If you knocked it off center at all, it won't load anything.

Well it loads AUDIO CD's fine. Because I tried one of those CD Lens Cleaner Discs and that played fine. But it still doesn't load any of them.
It recognizes that there is a Playstation format DISC but it won't load.
Does anyone know a good site where I may be able to get a replacement laser for a cheap price?

It sucks we can't edit posts in this forum. But oh well.
Anyway, so I fiddled around with my ps2 one more time. I changed teh position of the small while round disc thing so it changes the position of the laser.
I put in an original NEed for Speed UNderground 2 and it worked! Now i have to muster up courage to install my flip top again :(
Again, thanks for all your help!

I had this same probelm it seemed as though the dial cirlce needed to be like right in the middle where that little metal piece is and then the games would load.

Hey nik3t. I'm glad you made the bastard work!
Now I'm a little more inspired and will try turning the metal disc again and see what I can get...
One thing I am quite curious is that my 15000 model doesn't have that disc there... Dunno if it is the default setting for the model, or if the store that installed my modchip didn't want to anyone mess with that... The only thing that have in the place is a hexagonal holed screw...

Sounds like a media issue to me. That's what happened when you used cheap media. Either you burned too fast, used cheap media, or you didn't burned right in the first place.
I've been burning PS2 games and dvd movies using Taiyo Yuden and Maxell (mij by Hitachi) burned at 4X only, and I've never experienced any loading or freezing problems whatsoever.
Good luck!!

Actually it is happening to EVERY DVD I try to run... Be it movie (original or backup) or game (original or backup)...
I've messed with that thing that raises/lower the laser quite a long time yesterday, but got nothing out of it... Guess I need to buy a new laser then...

Take it to a pro and see what they say. Fiddling around with the laser is not recommended. Some of these sites do repairs:
26. Q. I'm in the market for a modchip or premodded console. What are some reputable sites I can order from?
A. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/251223 In addition modchip.com and norcalmods.com are supposed to be reliable.
