My ps2 won't play Ps1 games anymore

It seems that my ps2 won't play any of my final fantasy games from ps1 anymore. I can only assume that my mod chip has something to do with this, because the last time I played those games my ps2 was mod chip free and it worked just fine. I've wasted quite a few CDs/DVDs trying to back up my original copies, but even the backups don't seem to want to play. Has this happened to anyone else? Am I doomed until I buy myself a ps3 in a few years from now?

EDIT: Sorry for this post, I hadn't noticed the similar one that was already posted. When I was backing up my games I was using alcohol 120%, but I didn't set the mode to playstation, I just left it as it was. Would that be enough to mess things up? Thanks!

which chip do you have???

some chips require that you boot in PS1 mode and this could be your problem.

I have no idea which chip I have to be honest. All I know is I payed a shop $160 for a mod chip installation and a new lense. But they did tell me it's one of the newer ones, as I only got it modded this last summer. But thanks for the info, I'll look into that. Any ideas on how some chips would be switched over to PS1 mode?

holding reset from standby til the eject light comes on is one way on a Magic chip.

i'd try to find out which chip i have. if it's a dms4 pro get the new as of today Toxic OS 0.4, it's kick azz.

no problem. you'll also find that in most cases you'll have to boot in this fashion to play any DVD movie or a dual layer original game, unfortunatly most chips that have this dual boot will not play burnt dual layer games though.
