Overclocked cpu and now I can't get it back to original setting

kind of have a long story but I will try and make it short and sweet! I originally bought a amd 2200, I think the company did a bait and switch and gave me an amd 1400. I have been using it for about a year at 1333 mhz. Then i went out and bought a game that requires at least 1.4 ghz so I tried overclocking the amd 1400, I really don't know what I am doing as I have never tried to overclock. I chose a high performance setting and it automatically gave me the best settings I could get, now the machine is unstable and locks up 5 seconds into the computer getting to the desktop. I tried to reset the jumpers to get it back to the 1333 mhz but now all it reads is 1733 mhz. So the only thing I could think of was to go out and get a better processor, which I did. I bought an amd 2800 barton and should arrive today. My question is what did I do to my computer and is there a way I could save the processor and does anyone think that putting in a better processor will help my situation?
I went into Bios and went into advanced chipset and changed the setting from auto to high performance. It went from 1333 mhz to 1733 mhz, I realized that the machine was not running stable so I reset the jumpers and everything went back to default but the mobo is still seeing the processor at 1733 mhz on auto with a fsb at 100 mhz, the dram setting is on spd at 200 mhz. I can't get the mobo to go back to the original setting of 1333 mhz when it was stable. I did a system restore and it still didn't work.

go next to battery on mobo....there is a jumper,take off and put on the other two pins and then place back to oringinal pins[there should be 3 pins]this is called cmos.this will clear the cmos and bring it back to default.....peace

Thats what I did when I said I reset the jumpers, I just did not word it right.

theres another jumper on left side about half way up mobo.that changes your fsb.try that one....try going to manu and getting the manual and you will find out what each jumper does on the mobo....hope this helped.....peace

what mobo are you using ie. brand & model number ... if you are unsure use cpu-z http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php you need to download\install to use ;)

Firstly you probably got the CPU you asked for, not a swapped one of a lower spec.
You bought an AMD 2200+, that is its model numbers, not its speed.
If you multiply the clock speed by 1.5 you will end up with the equivalent Intel clock speed for the CPU. (1400x1.5=2100)
AMDs run slower than Intel CPUs, but due to the calculations performed per clock cycle being higher on the AMD CPU by about 1.5 times, they perform the same amount of work at a lower speed.
The reason the system became unstable, is due to you trying to run the CPU at too higher overclock.
What board do you have and what version of BIOS is loaded?

I have a msi k7n2-v part # ms-6729, there are three jumpers all together, one is to run in safe mode, one that resets cmos and the third is to short 100 mhz, is the third what your talking about because I pulled it off and it still did nothing.

I am unsure what version the bios is, I bought the board about 2 yrs ago and have never updated. I was reading on these forums yesterday about overclocking and trying to figure out what I might have done wrong, I came across the multiplier only recently and was curious as to what it is. I went into the bios last night to see if there was something in there about the multiplier and found nothing. I also read something about increasing the voltage to make it more stable and found it in my bios but was unable to adjust, there was no option to adjust, just to view were it was at, I have never messed with it so it should be at default settings. You are right about the processor, I did by a amd 2200 but I have never been able to get the machine stable enough, everytime I try to increase the fsb it would reboot, then it would give me an alarm and my monitor would not turn on. Thats why I am so familiar with clearing the cmos because that was the only way I could get the machine to run again. It always went back to 1333 mhz and would say it was an amd 1400. Thats why I thought I got jipped. Everytime I try to clear the cmos now, the mobo detects an amd 2100+ at 1733 mhz but it locks up at the desktop eveytime.
On a side note, I would have updated the bios earlier but I do not have a floppy drive, can you update the bios by cd?

just dont take the jumper off,you have to put on pins 2 and 3 and then back to 1 and 2....same with the fsb...move it down to 2 and 3 pin or up to 1 and 2 pin....taking off jumper will do nothing as you can see....peace
bios updates are found on msi`s site....look there.if theres none your mobo may not suppoet it

Your mis understandin me, I did reset the cmos by putting it on the top two pins, leaving for about a minute and the putting it on the bottom two pins and it does reset back to default but it still is saying that its an amd 2100+ at 1733 mhz and still locks up at the desktop. Before whenever I reset the cmos, it would say it was an amd 1400+ at 1333 mhz and it would run stable. The other jumper has only two pins, either covered or uncovered. the third jumper is to run in safe mode. Its as if the default settings got changed and everytime I reset it goes back to the setting I don't want which is an amd 2100+ at 1733 mhz even though when I made the purchase for this cpu it was an amd 2200+. Does this make sense!

I know it resets because I do not have a floppy drive and everytime I reset the cmos, it says I have one by default so I have to go back into bios and tell it none in order to boot. It is reseting back to default. But it still says I have an amd 2100+ and runs unstable.

I found the motherboard by doing the good ole google search. Its probably not on MSI's website becasuse its an outdated board. The other problem most of the websites that talk about it are in different languages.
Dont let the door hit you on the way out, beacause I dont want ass prints on my new door!

rugripper, those are just the recent boards to come out for msi, go to the top right where it says product search and type in k7n2-v and it will pull up my board. I did by a new cpu, an amd 2800 barton and should arrive today but I am still at work. Do you think by putting in a better chip, it might fix this issue?

the batt resets the bios,thought you did that....you have to read the tech support page to find your problem and then update the bios if needed....peace

depends on motherboard that you might be able to do live update. if not than make a bootable cd & copy the files needed to do bios update.

you have to read the page to see if you can....there are detail descriptions on how to update bios...follow them...peace
update:i would go buy a floppy drive because it states you need to rewrite bios on notepad and then add to floppy and then reflash....floppy disc drives are 8 bucks,cheap.unless your bios can be flash from cdrom that came with mobo your out of luck....even if you flash bios dosent mean the multipliers or voltage upgrades are on it.if the flash chip and mobo support it it will if not everything is pretty much set to auto.....peace

After removing the battery.
Go into BIOS and set the CPU FSB to 133 and with a ratio of x10 or auto.
This set it back to what it was originally, as those board are set to 133 fSB by default.
This will at least get ou stable again.
Not a particularly good board for overclocking though, so would limit what you do after that.
