All, thanks for answering. After several weeks of learning how to burn ps2 games and finally getting copies to work well. I have now joined a newsgroup and have downloaded my first couple games in winrar. Kudos to everyone on this site for posting supportive materials for us noobs. I need to ask my first question, after looking for the answer many places. I have downloaded AeonFlux and have 51 out of 52 rar files and also have all the par files. Could someone specifically explain or give link to how to use the par files to rebuild missing rar files. (I have successfully rar'ed and burned 3 games so far) Will the game work? how successful are par's in recreating whats missing? how many rar's could be missing for par to still be a successful fix? or am I way off base here..... Xnks

after more reading, I think I found my own answer = If its missing some part the whole thing is missed up and no way to fix it, try downloading from another source. :) I hope thats right.....

Yeah I think so, I don't download games myself but am pretty sure that if you haven't completed the download and got all the rar files then it's stuffed!!!
The only thing you might be able to do is get the missing rar file off someone who downloaded that exact same game from the same place.. it's worth a shot.

no,you need quickpar to repair it
you do not download the missing parts,(only do this when you have to)
get it from here
http://www.quickpar.org.uk/
just install it,...then
when you have downloaded a file from newsgroup,it should come with lots of par files..
look for the smallest par file,(normally at the top,and about 2kb in size)
right click on it,and open it...(the first time you do this, you will need to find quickpar from the list, and manually select it.remebering for future use,to tick the box which says "alway do this with this type of file"....(next time quickpar will automatically open)
quickpar will open, and the files will be checked
you will either.get the all green "no repair required".or the blue "blocks missing"
just click on repair, the download will be repaired,(if the uploaded has provided enough par blocks)
if you havent got enough blocks, then you must go back to the newsgroup site, and manually download the rar archive that is missing
only certain sites have this option
www.newzbin.com is the best site i know, but its about 25p per week for premium priveldges,(worth the monies)
you can use the sfv file to determine which part you need
you must use quickpar everytime before extracting a set of rar archives, saves a lot of hassle

I was just trying to help the guy out..no-one was replying to his question(s)
Ah well, I've learned something new too... not that it's any good to me as I won't use it, but at least I can pass on my knowledge to others now.. you should add this to your sticky if you haven't already... :)

you cant use it for rar files, that come with torrents
each download from a newsgroup comes with its own set of par files, for that particular set of rar files, and are different to torrents
from newsgroups, you are more prone to errors, due to the retention time, and what server you are subscribed to,and the uploader of course
newsgroups are a little more complex then torrents, but in many ways similar
as for rar downloads with a torrent, they cannot be repaired,
only by re-downloading the individual corrupt rar file, can you salvage it,and thats only if you have the sfv file to determine which archive is damaged
even then,it depends on whether the uploader has balls'd up the image
yeeeeeha,news years soon
