It will burn cd's but dvd's are impossible. Asking for extra plug ins, dvd's come out w/o sound, takes an hour or 2 to "analyze"/load contents to create a coaster when other programs will burn the same material in 10 minutes or less??????????
Cannot create menus with the other programs unfortunately which is the ONLY reason I ever attempt to use Nero for dvd's.
Buyer beware!

I've burned hundreds of DVDs with Nero 6 and now Nero 7. I have the full registered version. It has never asked for plug-ins or anything else. Burn speed is a matter of choice. I do all my burns at 4X on Taiyo Yuden -R media. 8X burns in about 7-8 minutes are no problem though.
My usual process is to use Shrink with Nero set to open and burn. If I'm actually going to sit at the PC I'll use AnyDVD and Nero Recode.
Nero can be troublesome though. I know lots of people dislike it. I would recommend using Shrink to rip and compress with Decrypter to burn. I have AnyDVD in the background to get past the newer protection schemes.

Ive burnt a couple thousand dvds with Nero and never had any real problems..it is picky though. The image has to be completely unencrypted, discs have to be good and it cant hang up anywhere in movie or it will error..which is good if want perfect backups without glitches..If you can burn a disc in Nero then copy that disc back to image or disc then it is near top perfect as you will probably get.

Thanks for the replies. It has NEVER burned a dvd w/o some problem.
Mostly they end up w/ NO sound. I did burn a dvd w/ .mpg files that had sound (though sound & audio was out of sync in several places).
In most cases I am burning pre-authored unencrypted concerts in video_ts folders. I have tried adding an audio_ts folder somehow in case that is the problem but there doesn't seem to be a way to do it.
I have added the updates, etc. from Nero site to try & get all plug-ins or components needed to no avail (after it analyzes all the content a pop up window says something about dolby digital plug in, etc. which I don't understand).
I burn the SAME video_ts folders w/ other programs w/ NO problems (though the programs don't have ability to add menu's or chapters as I'd like to).
Nero came w/ a Lite-On dvd burner so perhaps missing something? It could be user error but at the very least it is NOT user friendly. I'd love it to work for me since many say it is so good (AND I often need to add menus).

I have to agree with "fastfrank" in query to Nero. I've been using Nero 6 Ultra and now Nero 7 Premium (since late October 2005) and I've never experienced any issues with plugins, no audio, coasters, etc. whatsoever. Either Nero 6.6.0.18 or Nero 7.0.1.4 (now), it has never let me down -- I've been burning with Nero and so far it's flawless.
My only suggestion is to "completely" wipe out your current Nero via Nero's General Clean Tool, then reinstall it back on, then give it another shot to see what's your new results.
Good luck!!

When you create a new compilation (File->New...->DVD-Video) Nero automatically creates both the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders. Though the AUDIO_TS folder is usually empty on most DVD's (always in my experience), I believe it's still required. What method (in Nero) are you using to create a new DVD?
Also, if you're using the OEM version of Nero with a different recorder it may not work.

That AUDIO_TS folder is always supposed to empty, but included with the rest of the files. Audio on a DVD-Video is always multiplexed in with the .VOB files. The .ifo files tell the player the location of the audio streams, among other things.
The AUDIO_TS is going to be used for making DVD-Audio DVDs at some point. I think that MP3 has left that idea an orphan though.
Happy New Year to All!
Cheers,

Quote: My only suggestion is to "completely" wipe out your current Nero via Nero's General Clean Tool, then reinstall it
I have had to re-install at least once & prob's remained.
Apparently it will let you had files & go thru all the motions THEN give pop-up window saying "DVD-Video Plug In required", Dolby Digital 2-channel decoding is not avail., this feature can be added by installing the Plug-In, Nero 6 Ultra Edit. retail package, or the web version."
Essentially Nero & Lite-On con you into thinking you have a usable program but you must buy the $25 Plug-In & add serial number for it to work.
At least I have figured this out but it would be MUCH better if they made it clear beforehand rather than allowing all the loading/importing/analyzing, etc of files.
I found the Plug-In online & added it though w/o a serial # so it still doesn't work. At least I do not get sound when pressing play to edit or add chapters to a dvd (as I think you should). I am not going to waste another DVD-R to find out for sure but I am pretty confident if it burned it would have no sound.
Are there any free DVD burning software that have menu creation capabilities? And that burn Dvd 9?

Some Nero OEM version bundled with some drives do not support DVD writing - only support VCD & SVCD writing. That's why it ask for the DVD plug-in. The full version do not have such problem.

If you will buy the retail version of Nero Ultra 7 you get all plug ins that you need. They auto. install when you install the program.
If you download the trial version off the website, you have to buy the DVD plug in.
It is as cheep to google and buy the retail verison. I got 7 ultra for 40.00.
I might add that I have been useing Nero since verson 5 and not had any major problems. Of course ;you will have coasters if you do not use good media as stated above.

The Nero CD (OEM Suite) itself says it contains (among other things): Mpeg-2 SVCD/DVD plug-in.
A bit confusing...despite others' satisfaction w/ it - I am too leery of it to buy anything from them at this point.
What Plug-In will it lack? What new technicality will there be?
...And why bundle a dvd burning software with a dvd burner if it will not/cannot burn dvd's?

Good point pikea. Another thing is if you try to use the software with any other burner than the one it came with. It probably won't work.
I think of Nero OEM as just a glorified advertisement.
The full retail version is very capable and you don't have to worry about plug ins.
The price is steep and if all you needed it for is just a single feature, like Burning ROM then it wouldn't be worth it. I use three of the features all the time and some of the others on occasion so it is actually cheaper than buying all those programs separately.
NeroVision Express is the program you use to make the menus and there are alternatives. None are free though. I have DVD Lab for example which is great if you need a more complex menu structure.

The plus thing about full versioned Nero is that you can use for multiple burners. All my 5 DVDRW uses Nero 6 for burning.

Piikea I was having the exact same problem as you and I have a Liteon burner as well. In fact, Nero wouldn't let me add my IFO and BUP files in the burning stage.
Anyway, what I did was convert my AVI file through Nero (there's a guide in the first thread on this forum) instead of VSO DivXtoDVD and it worked.
Worth a shot I guess...

I uninstalled & got Nero 7 demo....good news, it has the dvd video plug in AND I can hear sound in create chapters stage. Bad news, it still sucks. As Dondii posted it doesn't let you add IFO and BUP files, only VOB's.
I am stuck trying to use it cuz I need to burn a DVD9 VIDEO_TS file. md5 verifies so file is ok. Others are burning same file so it is not the problem.
It loaded VOB's (asked whether to merge VOB's - I did because seems if you don't you get a hesitation or pause when goes from 1 VOB to next). The file is 7.6 GB yet Nero says 4.88 GB (????). Plus it had the beginning (that is, initial main menu & start of show) AT THE END in a 45m segment where the other segments are 13m 42s each. I could DRAG it to the top but it just isn't laid out properly & I doubt would come out correctly.
Granted, I'm only semi-dvd knowledgable but this program is ridiculously problematic EVERY time I've ever (attempted) to burn a dvd.
I will have to find another that will burn DVD9 (& can add menus, etc.) & hopefully have better luck.
I give up on this piece of %#@#@!
