Currently the majority of 1080p HDTVs will NOT except a 1080p signal from EXTERNAL sources, i.e. game systems like the future PS3, dvd players (Oppo) or maybe Blu-Ray/HD-DVD (I don't have a 1080p display or Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player to know for sure). That's because external 1080p input support isn't coming until HDMI version 1.3 (1.3 will also include true audio support for Blu-Ray/HD-DVD as well on the audio side of things: Receivers, Video Players, etc.). Hopefully the PS3 will cause HDMI 1.3 to come to market sooner than later. Unfortunatly, HDMI is only backward compatible and not 'upward' compatible: a current 1080p HDTV with HDMI 1.1 or 1.2 set will never except an external 1080p signal from any HDMI 1.3 device. Now I believe current 1080p displays are able to display signals from INTERNAL tuners, CableCARDs, etc. but that's only because they are internal and not connected by HDMI/DVI cables. For PC displays, look for HDMI/DVI connections in the future to require HDCP. Current displays without HDCP will very limited with HD content.
To answer your questions:
1. Xbox 360 will not support 1080p, according to news releases the PS3 will via HDMI. Of course if you hooked up a Xbox 360 to a current 1080p display that only displays 1080p native, then the signal (480p/720p/1080i) would be 'converted' to the display's 1080p as long as it accepts them.
2. Games supporting 1080p will not be released for the Xbox 360 - THAT I KNOW OF. There have been 480p and 1080i games released for the PS2 that were done in software. Only the PS3 (again, according to news releases) will have true 1080p games.
3. Existing 720p/1080i games will be upward compatible, meaning playable on 1080p HDTV that accept 720p/1080i signals (I'm sure they all do) and displayed at 1080p (especially if that is the sets only native output). As for PC displays, I believe 720p/1080i would be displayed at their perspective PC resolutions normally and no conversion would happen. Maybe others can chime in on the PC side of things.
