Sounds like a corrupt HDD.
Suggest looking at the following site and running the tests listed to try and recover the HDD.

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000630.htm

If it fails then either try a fresh install from CD or get a new HDD and do a fresh install on that. Either way, if it is shot, you are going to need a bootable copy of Windows.

Get into your bios at startup and see if it recognizes your HDD. Let it find it, save settings and try again. If that doesn?t work look up a search on loading a MBR on your HDD. You will need a bootable disk and I believe it goes FDISK /MBR

By the way, MBR means memory boot record.

Correction, late night mistake... Master Boot Record. :)

Hi

I have made a boot disk - eventually 6 disks - but that fails to work as it does not appear to recognise the CD Rom drive!

I have check BIOS setup and ensured that it boots from CD Rom - but no joy - but the light does flash on!!

Is it likely to be the HHD or the CD ROM or both??

Plus any idea what I can expect to pay for each of these as it is a fairly old laptop

Cheers in advance and best wishes to all for 2006

Do you have an Original Windows XP CD disk? Have you tried that or maybe a friends to see if you can boot from the CD first?
