Most of the newest games like Socom and GTA are encrypted with 2.0 firmware, so your PSP MUST have that firmware or higher to play them. Some older games need a higher firmware than 1.0 or 1.5, but all they do is read your PSP and see what version it is, so you can use programs to fake your PSP into saying it's a different version than what it actually is.

That's easier said than done. Older games that require firmware higher than 1.5 simpy look at your PSP and make sure you have a higher version installed. They don't need a higher firmware to run. They just want to see that you have a certain firmware installed. In that case you can use version changers that make your PSP say it's a different firmware. The games looks at your PSP, your PSP tells it there is a vertain firmware running, and the game is happy and works.

Newer games are encrypted with the 2.0 or higher firmware. It MUST hae that version running to be able to decrypt the game and let your PSP read it properly. So a program that simply makes your PSP says it's a different firmware than it is won't do any good.

What is most like to happen I think is that someone will discover or make away to be able to downgrade from higher versions so that you can update, play what games you want, and downgrade. Or someone will develop a way to run firmware off a memory stick so that your PSP can actually be whatever version you want temporarily.

However, I'm not a coder or hacker, so I cna't promise either of these will happen.

Yeah the only game that actually needs the update is GTA liberty city stories becuase it has AVC videos which only PSP 2.x will support. I tried WAB version changer and it worked on some games:
