I have a lot of mp3's on my machine (maybe 15gb or so) and I'm trying to figure out what's the best way to go about sorting and tagging them.

Preferably without going through the pain of doing it all in Windows Media Player.

I need something with a function to automagically scan my collection, and organize my mp3's into seperate folders by artist/album. It should also do this on the fly should I change any of the artist/album info, sort of like iTunes. I hope everyone get's what I mean because that's a little hard to explain.

Also, it should let me tag the file name in the track - title - artist - album format. This is fairly common in tagging software, I just put it out there because some programs DON't allow this, like iTunes again.

I recently went on a downloading binge on download.com, and softpedia.com and haven't had much luck. Either the interface is too clunky or it's missing the first option I listed.

Can anyone recommed anything? Doesn't matter if it's free or commercial software. I'm really trying to avoid doing this the hard way as it will take maybe a month. It goes without saying this would suck without bounds.

Of all the mp3 taggers that I've seen in the past six or seven years, I can tell you that Tag&Rename is hands down the best. It is easy to use, with a windows explorer-like interface, and has loads anf loads of features. Rename and tag your mp3s in pretty much any way and configuration you can think of. You can download a trial version which lasts 30 days I think, but once you use it you will see that it is definately worth the $30 to register it.

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

Yep Tag & Rename is the best. It also lets you add pictures to the ID tags of files.

Tag & rename isn't half bad. So far everthing looks good. One last thing though. Is there a way to have it automatically moves files to their appropiate folders when tagging them? Example being I have folder titled "artist a, subfolder album title a". I come across a another album that belongs to this artist but isn't tagged, so I tag it. What I'm looking for it to do is automatically move this new album I tagged into the "artist a" folder. I didn't find an option for this, assuming one exist.

Seeing as this software is pretty straightforward this isn't a complaint, just a minor annoyance. Thanks again.

Im not sure if T&R can move the actual files to different folders.

no I don't think so, you'll have to create folders and move your albums manually in windows explorer
