Hi. I'm using Nero 6.3.0.3, w/a Toshiba SD-R6012 v1332 DVD-RW drive, and Ridata 4.7GB 4X DVD-R media. When using both Nero and Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 the burn claims to be successful, but when I try to read the DVD, the computer reacts like there is no disc in the drive, and when I do a "disc properties" in Nero it says the disc is blank. No error messages, just a coaster. I've tried four times w/the same results. I can burn CD-Rs w/no problem. I tried looking for a firmware upgrade for the drive, but none exist. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong? Thanks very much for your help.

Or, to be more precise, no updates currently exist online.

dimar,
whompus linked you to the correct page. You are reading your information wrong. Your drive is the SD-R6012 and that v1332 is your firmware version, not your drive model version. It is behind as 1334 looks like the latest for that drive.
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=750
try updating the firmware and post a log if your burn fails after the update. You also need to update nero.
Quote:
Nero 6.3.0.3
Vers 6 is up to 6.6.0.18 and many things were fixed in the updates.
http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/nero-up.php
Also a burn log will point out any problems you may have with your system. Vers 6 history can be found in program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory.txt Just need the last burn from that log as it will list many burns. The burns will be seperated by something like this:
Quote:
====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======
Also remember to edit out your serial number from the post. Just from the little bit of information you provided, i can see problems.

Thanks, guys. About the firmware update. There are so many firmware updates on that page. How can you tell if 1334 is the latest when there are also 1731, 1F34, 1N34, etc? It is totally confusing. I don't want to install the wrong update and ruin my drive.

I will update Nero and try again, although I have a feeling that won't solve the problem b/c Adobe Premiere Pro also fails to burn, and, just like Nero, returns no errors. The Nero history file of my previous failed burn (w/Nero v6.3.0.3) is below. Please let me know if you see any problems.

Thanks very much.

@dimar

just passing thru... the firmware choices for your burner are a little 'busy'!, but 1334 is the one for your drive as you currently have 1332. it's near the end of that first line on the firmware link

Main PC ~ Intel C2Q Q6600 (G0 Stepping)/Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3/2GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500/Zalman CNPS9700/Antec 900/Corsair HX 620W

This media is ok, but you might try something different, maybe a +R verbatim, or Sony, Maxell, Fuji, all made in Japan. Trying different good media can be the easiest fix, if media was your problem. In your case, do the firmware update for your drive and try the latest vers of Nero 6. You log looks good, no major problems in there that i can see. A firmware update is the drive manufacturers way to update your drive to handle newer media. It can affect all burning by any program. Give those things a try. You may not have much confidence, but i have seen ppl get back to burning just by updating Nero. Firmware out of date can easily cause the problems you are having. Also try different media, you don't have to buy a bunch.

Usually we have to tell ppl to slow down, but in your case, i think you can speed up to 4x. :)

I flashed the DVD drive and am trying to burn a DVD now. I dl'd the Nero update but am trying to burn w/my original Nero just to see if the flash update did the trick by itself (just out of curiosity). After I get the result of this burn I'll upgrade Nero regardless. I'll keep you posted. Thanks very much for your help, Max.

And thanks, creaky, for helping me w/the firmware confusion.

So the burn after the firmware update didn't work. Then I updated Nero to the latest v6 (6.6.0.18) and that burn didn't work. All the same result: "Burn completed successfully." But when I try to read it, I get no disc in drive and Nero's disc info says the disc is empty and will even let me burn on it again, as if a blank new disc, w/the same "successful" result, but unrecognized in my drive. What is going on? Thanks again for the continued help.

dimar,
Ok, so why don't you try different media? If you did, post who made it. You can find out with programs like DVD Identifier http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id... it tells you who manufactured the disk. Media can make all the difference in the world, but it has to be GOOD media. Not slamming Ritek, but maybe your system likes something else? Post the last, updated nero log, and we will see if there is anything still going on in your log. That burning on the disc and letting you do it again sounds pretty strange. Something is going on there for sure. Maybe it is just media, but the latest log will tell us if something else is happening. Keep at it, we can get you burning, im sure of it, as i look down at my keyboard and see a couple of CMC coasters sitting there doing a very good coaster job. :) If one of us can't figure it out, then creaky will fire up that cyberbrain he has hidden on his boat, and the answer will appear.

Sorry, I intended to paste the latest burn log in the last post, just forgot.

Below is the information provided by DVD Identifier, and below that is the latest burn log (after firmware AND Nero update).

I want you guys to know I really appreciate your help, persistence, and patience. Thank you very much.

By the way, what is CMC? I've seen it mentioned in several posts. Is it a certain brand of DVD media?

Update-- Videohelp.com rates my Ridata media as nearly flawless, which leads me to believe it is my hardware. I have successfully burned DVDs in the past, but it was only a couple times over a year ago and I forget which media I used. Again, CD-Rs burn w/no problem.

hi, now you mention CD's, DVD Burners have 2 lasers, one for CD's and one for DVD's, so that's sometimes a clue as to whether the burner's playing silly beggars.

as to CMC (Ugh!), see this well-worn link from my sig for reasons not to use Memorex/CMC/Imation/TDK - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/232406

and as MaxBurn says, there's no need for such extreme speeds as 1x (i sometimes read that some ppl who do PS2 games like to burn so slowly but with movies 4x is more than adequate)

@creaky, Dimar's log from DVD Identifier says that 2x is the maximum for that drive, also at 128mb memory free, seems low?.When I remember to turn off all the running progs, I have 300+.

@attar -

you may well be right about the burn speed, i must admit i recommended 4x without checking the disc & driver burn speed capabilities, i probably need less speed more haste :)

dimar,
according to the last log you posted, Nero was not updated.
Quote:
below that is the latest burn log (after firmware AND Nero update).
The log shows you are still using the old version of Nero:
Quote:
Nero version: 6.3.0.3
And it needs to be updated, if you haven't done so already.
You did get your firmware updated.
Quote:
Burn process started at 1x (1,380 KB/s)
you don't need to go that slow. You can bump it up to 4x.
And it doesn't matter what someother site rates the media, it is how YOUR system likes the media. Don't disregard media as being the culpret just because it was rated as excellent somewhere. Yes the riteks are good, but try something different, or you will never know if media is causing your problem. Media is easy to change, doesn't cost much, and should be tried to completely eliminate the possibility of media being the offender. For that, i would use ONLY Verbatim, or Taiyo Yuden media (sony, fuji, maxell, all made in japan). Try using GOOD media, and post the burn log with the latest version of nero, if it fails. Eventually we will find what is causing your problem, hopefully without costing you any more money.
I have seen many logs where it came down to changing the media, and that fixed the problem. Until they changed media, they were still having problems. Once they changed to GOOD media, burning problems vanished. And this is on more than one system/set-up. Riteks are not as bad as using CMC, but some systems are picky about which type of media they like to burn.
And on the drive speed, i noticed this:
Quote:
** WARNING : MODE SENSE Is Obsolete And Not Always Properly Supported
The only time i see speed settings that low, are when i don't have a disc in at the start of a burn in nero. Unless it is a very old drive, 4x burning should be easily possible.
Also reading your first post i noticed you can burn CDs but not DVDs. Have you checked your ASPI layers? The log doesn't show you having a problem, but Nero Info Tool can check your settings quickly. You should see something like this:
and some stuff on ASPI if you find problems:

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/aspisetup.cfm
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/frcaspi.cfm
and a link to aspi discussed in more detail with links
http://www.ncf.carleton.ca/~aa571/aspi.htm

You could have a dead DVD laser, but the CD one is still working. Have you tried a laser lens cleaner? Maybe there is some gunk on your DVD laser.

I just bought a spindle of Verbatim 16x 4.7GB DVD-R and burned another coaster. Same result in Nero: "burn completed successfully." Below is the DVD-R media info and Nero burn log. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. By the way, is the Verbatim media I'm using good/recommended?

Max, I ran Nero Info Tool and under System ASPI it says, "ASPI installation is corrupt." Nero ASPI comes up fine. The files listed under System ASPI are WNASPI32.DLL, ASPI32.SYS, WOWPOST.EXE (no WINASPI.DLL like yours). I know nothing about ASPI and I haven't checked those links you posted just yet, but I will later when I have more time. Could this be the cause of my problem? Again CDs burn great, just not DVDs. And I have never cleaned my laser. Are there some other things I can rule out before I try a laser cleaner, or should I do that first? Thank you very, very much for your continued help.

Update-- I ran aspichk.exe and it also confirmed that WINASPI.DLL isn't installed. But reading some of the threads in the ASPI links you provided, I gathered that Nero uses its own ASPI files, independent of the system ASPI, in which case the state of my system ASPI shouldn't matter. Is this correct? And if I can burn CDs, wouldn't that indicate that I don't have an ASPI problem? Thanks.

The system ASPI is important and is probably what is causing your failed burns. Nero is supposed to use it's own ASPI, but a corrupt or missing system aspi can cause failed burns. The Verbs you are using is some of the best media out there, so we can eliminate the media as being a problem now. My friend had a corrupt system aspi, and he could burn DVDs, but not CDs using Nero. Just the opposite of your situation, but giving the same kind of problem. After install of ASPI he was able to burn CDs again. Nothing else was changed, and it fixed his problem. I have a feeling your problem will be fixed when you fix your system ASPI. Try that first, but cleaning the laser is not hard to do. If you can see it with the drive door open, you can take a q-tip soaked in rubbing alcohol and us it to clean the lens if you can get at it. There a also discs you can buy that clean the laser lens. Try the regular ASPI program first, and if that one doesn't work, use Force ASPI. You can check to see if they took by looking at Info tool. Get ASPI fixed, and then try a burn. I am at work, and have to sleep soon, but post if you still have problems. Some ppl have a hard time getting ASPI to take, but it was easy for me when i did it.

I ran the Adaptec aspi_471a2 installation for XP32, but Nero Info Tool still says my System ASPI is corrupt. I think it may be b/c it sees that WINASPI.DLL isn't installed. But according to Adaptec's aspi_471a2 readme.txt (quoted below), XP isn't supposed to have WINASPI.DLL or WOWPOST.EXE (although mine always had WOWPOST.EXE).

"I. Operating System ASPI Files Installed
Microsoft Windows XP wnaspi32.dll, aspi32.sys

(you may not have all of these files; which files you have in your PC depends on which Windows platform is in your PC)

For Win XP 32-bit:
ASPIXP.SYS will be copied to %windir%\system32\drivers\ASPI32.SYS
WNASPIXP.DLL will be copied to %windir%\system32\WNASPI32.DLL"

And quoted from Adaptec aspi_471a2 docs file, ASPI for Win32
Technical Reference (aspi32.pdf):

"If you are using explicit dynamic linking, remember that the ASPI for Win32 DLL is named WNASPI32.DLL
and not WINASPI.DLL. Make sure to call LoadLibrary appropriately."

So since I installed the two ASPI files the readme claims I need for XP, should I ignore the Nero Info Tool corrupt results? Or should I run Force ASPI now?

Thank you very much.

Can sombody help me please. I have DVD Shrink 3.2 and burn with Nero. I have been having problems with a few dvd's that I burn. I am told the dvd burn was successful but when I put it into my dvd player it tells me disk is dirty and can't be read. I clean the disks and they still don't work. I know they are not dirty as it has happened on several occasions with different disks. If anybody knows the problem please help. Thank you very much.
