Hi

I've been trying to reinstall my HP Photosmart printer after a reinstall of XP but everytime I load the drivers, i get a "found new hardware" message for Generic IEEE 1284.4 printing support. Each time it cannot find the drivers in any location and I can't stop the found new hardware message popping up everytime i start windows etc.

Few more bits of info:
- I am able to print through the printer although printing is VERY slow.
- I have other USB devices connected and these work fine.
- I'm running Win XP Home, with SP1 and SP2 (as I understood it USB support was included in SP1 but I already have this installed).

Grateful for any help and ideas!!

Thanks
Matt

Yes, I originally followed the HP software installation package to install the printer. However each time I ran the program couldn't find my printer. I consulted the HP website and installed the printer manually instead (through add printers) using the drivers from the HP installation program. In both cases the IEEE 1824.4 "Found new hardware" message appeared

This is the way to do it. Listen to me very well as I own a hp printer and their software is poorly written. This is what to do. Go to www.hp.com and look up ya hp printer. Under supports and downloads their should be a uninstaller to wipe out all files and registry. You may have to run it four times fully. At least this is the case with the 1315v all in one I own. Anyway run it 4 times. If it asks to reboot go ahead.

Now this is crucial. You need the setup disk not the web release. Run the setup off the disk. Go through the stages and you will come to a part that says please connect device now. There is a little box you can check that says I will install drivers later or I cant connect the device now. Check the box and continue.

Now very crucial. Go through the rest of the installation and dont reboot or take out the disk out of the drive. Once setup is done connect the device and the add hardware wizard should come up. Immediately it should start installing the correct drivers for the printer. Then yeah set. This is the only way I have found to get the damn drivers installed with the hp printers. I also have another older one that is the same way and I have even tried on a clean install of windows and had to do the same thing. If yeah follow the directions then you should be good. Let us know.:>

did you have this problem before with sp2 as some printers don't like sp2?
